Biography

Short Description

Gregory of Sinai, known in Greek as Grēgorios ho Sinaitēs, was a Byzantine monk, ascetic teacher, and spiritual writer of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, and one of the principal restorers of hesychasm in the Orthodox East. He was born in the village of Kukulos near Smyrna in western Asia Minor in the second half of the thirteenth century; no contemporary source records an exact year of birth. In youth he was captured by Turkish raiders and taken to Laodicea. After being ransomed he went to Cyprus, where he received the monastic tonsure. From Cyprus he proceeded to the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, from which he later took his epithet. Finding the community there little given to inner prayer, and amid the insecurity of the period, he left Sinai, spent time in Crete under a local hermit who instructed him in the Jesus Prayer and watchfulness of the heart, and eventually settled on Mount Athos.

On the Holy Mountain he lived as a hesychast, chiefly associated with the skete of Magoula near the monastery of Philotheou. He found that many Athonite monks, though faithful to the communal offices, were unpracticed in stillness (hesychia), inner watchfulness, and the unceasing invocation of the name of Jesus. He therefore taught a disciplined method joining a seated posture, regulated breathing, and the Prayer of the Heart, aimed at bringing the mind into the heart. His instruction attracted disciples, but repeated Turkish raids on Athos made continued residence difficult. After further wanderings, including a stay in Constantinople, he accepted the patronage of Tsar Ivan Alexander of Bulgaria and founded a monastery in the remote district of Paroria in the Strandzha mountains, then on the Byzantine–Bulgarian frontier.

The Paroria community became a school of hesychast life. From it Gregory’s teaching passed into the Bulgarian Church, above all through his disciple Theodosius of Tarnovo, who later founded the Kilifarevo monastery and whose own disciples helped carry hesychasm into other Slavic lands. Gregory composed a series of concise treatises and chapters on the spiritual life, including works on the commandments and doctrines, on stillness and the two methods of prayer, on how the hesychast should sit in prayer, and on the discernment of grace from demonic illusion. These texts, circulated in Greek and soon translated into Church Slavonic, became standard practical manuals of later Byzantine and Slavic hesychasm and were read alongside the more speculative Palamite theology of the same generation.

Gregory died at Paroria on 27 November 1346. The principal narrative of his life was written by his disciple Callistus, later Patriarch Callistus I of Constantinople. Gregory held no episcopal or patriarchal office; his reputation rests on monastic teaching and on the transmission of hesychast practice rather than on public controversy. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Commemorations are recorded on 8 August in Greek and related calendars and on 27 November, the day of his repose, in others. An exact year of birth is not preserved, and details of his family and early education remain sparse, as is typical for a monastic figure whose memory was kept chiefly in hagiography and in the manuscript tradition of his ascetical writings.
