Biography

Short Description

Gregory of Tours, born Georgius Florentius in the later 530s at Clermont (Arvernis) in the Auvergne of Gaul, was a Gallo-Roman bishop and the principal narrative historian of sixth-century Frankish Gaul. He belonged to a senatorial family that had already furnished several bishops to the churches of Gaul. His father Florentius held senatorial rank; his mother Armentaria linked him to further episcopal houses, including Gregory of Langres, his maternal great-grandfather, whose name he later took. An uncle, Gallus, bishop of Clermont, directed part of his early education. In youth he suffered a grave illness and, by his own later account, recovered after a pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint Martin at Tours, an episode that bound him lastingly to that saint’s cult.

He continued his studies in Scripture and in earlier Christian authors under Avitus, who succeeded Gallus at Clermont, and entered the clerical state. In 573, after the death of Bishop Eufronius, he was chosen bishop of Tours. King Sigebert I of Austrasia confirmed the election, and Gregory was consecrated at Reims. Tours was then among the most important sees in Gaul: it housed the shrine of Saint Martin, a major pilgrimage centre, and its bishop wielded considerable moral and political weight at the Merovingian courts. Gregory held the see for more than two decades, restoring churches, defending ecclesiastical property, and mediating among Frankish kings and their officials.

His episcopate fell in the years of violent rivalry among the sons of Chlothar I. He dealt with Chilperic I of Neustria, whose character and policies he portrayed harshly; with Guntram of Burgundy, of whom he wrote more favourably; and with the young Childebert II of Austrasia. He attended councils, judged disputes, and travelled to royal courts to plead for justice or for the rights of his church. He also promoted the cults of local saints, above all Saint Martin and Saint Julian of Brioude, and recorded their miracles in a series of hagiographical books.

His lasting reputation rests on the Ten Books of Histories, commonly called the History of the Franks. Composed in a Latin that reflects the spoken language of late antique Gaul, the work opens with a universal chronicle from Creation and then concentrates on the Frankish kingdoms from the late fifth century to 591. It remains the indispensable source for the political, social, and ecclesiastical history of Merovingian Gaul. He also wrote eight books of miracles—the Glory of the Martyrs, the Glory of the Confessors, the Life of the Fathers, and four books on the miracles of Saint Martin—together with a commentary on the Psalms and a treatise on ecclesiastical offices, the last two surviving only in fragments. These writings display both the piety of a sixth-century bishop and the outlook of a Gallo-Roman aristocrat living under Frankish rule.

Gregory died at Tours on 17 November 594 and was buried in his cathedral. He was honoured as a saint soon after death; his feast is kept on 17 November. Later medieval readers valued him above all as the historian of the Franks, and his works were widely copied and used throughout the Middle Ages.
