Biography

Short Description

Gregory the Icon Painter, also called Gregory the Iconographer and known in Slavonic sources as Grigorii ikonopisets, was an Eastern Orthodox monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the Monastery of the Caves at Kiev in Kievan Rus. He is numbered among the venerable fathers of that monastery and is commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Almost nothing can be established about his family, place of birth, or the years of his birth and death. Later liturgical notices and the tradition of the Lavra place him among the monastic community of the Caves in the medieval period, commonly the twelfth century, but no contemporary vita supplies a connected biography or precise dates.

He is remembered specifically as an icon painter. Iconography was a central sacred craft at the Pechersk Lavra, which became one of the principal centers of Christian art in the East Slavic world after its foundation in the eleventh century by Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves. Gregory’s designation in the synaxaria as an iconographer indicates that this work, rather than any episcopal office or public career, was the reason he was distinguished among the many monks of the house. No signed icons or detailed descriptions of particular images by his hand have been securely identified in surviving sources, and later writers do not preserve anecdotes of the kind that attach to the better-documented Caves iconographer Alypius.

Gregory died as a monk of the Lavra and was buried in the monastery caves. His relics are traditionally located in the Near Caves, also called the Caves of Saint Anthony. Orthodox tradition regards the remains of many of the Caves fathers as incorrupt, and Gregory is included in that local cult. He did not hold the office of bishop, patriarch, or pope. As a monk of the Lavra he is treated in the sources as a celibate monastic; no spouse or children are recorded.

Veneration of Gregory belongs to the wider cult of the Kiev Caves saints, which grew first at the monastery itself and was later received throughout the Russian Orthodox Church and other East Slavic Orthodox churches. He is commemorated individually on August 8 and again on September 28 at the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Near Caves. There is no record of a Western-style process of beatification or of canonization by a named pope or patriarch; his feast rests on the ancient monastic and liturgical tradition of the Lavra. Because the written evidence is so thin, any fuller reconstruction of his life would be conjectural. What can be stated with caution is that he was a monk-craftsman of the Caves whose memory was preserved by the monastery that housed his relics and by the Orthodox calendar.
