Biography

Short Description

Grigorij Pelsjemskij, commonly known in English as Gregory of Pelshma and in Russian as Grigorii Pelshemskii or Gregory Lopotov, was a Russian Orthodox monastic saint of the fifteenth century, honoured with the title of venerable (prepodobnyi) and remembered as a wonderworker of the Vologda region. He was born in the city of Galich to a family of boyars of the Lopotov house. No reliable source preserves the year of his birth. The surviving Life presents him as a man of pious upbringing who, after the death of his parents, gave away his inheritance and left the world for the monastery, in keeping with the pattern of many northern Russian ascetics of the later Middle Ages.

Gregory established himself on the Pelshma River, a tributary of the Sukhona in the lands of Vologda, not far from the later town of Kadnikov. There he founded a monastery dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, which came to be called the Pelshma Monastery or Lopotov Monastery after his family name. He gathered a community, introduced a coenobitic rule, and became known for fasting, night prayer, and the instruction of monks. The foundation belongs to the wider fifteenth-century monastic colonization of the Russian North, in the generation after Saint Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Demetrius of Priluki, though a direct discipleship to either of those figures is not securely documented.

According to the traditional hagiography, Gregory spoke against the civil strife of the Muscovite princely wars and specifically rebuked Prince Dmitry Yurevich Shemyaka. The Life relates that Shemyaka’s servants cast the saint from a bridge into the water and that Gregory emerged unharmed, after which the prince asked pardon. This episode cannot be confirmed from independent chronicles in all its details, but it became central to his memory as a fearless admonisher of rulers. He is also credited in church tradition with miracles of healing and with pastoral care for the surrounding rural population.

Church tradition places his death on 30 September 1442 and his burial in the monastery he had founded. He was venerated locally as a saint and wonderworker; his name entered the liturgical calendars of the Russian Church. The principal feast is 30 September (corresponding to 13 October on the Gregorian calendar when the Julian calendar is used liturgically). He is also commemorated in the Synaxis of the Saints of Vologda on the third Sunday after Pentecost. Scholarly reference works sometimes mark the year of death as uncertain. The Pelshma monastery was secularized in the eighteenth century, and the later history of his relics is only fragmentarily recorded. Beyond the hagiographical Life, liturgical texts, and later synaxaria, contemporary documentary evidence for his career remains scarce, and several details of his early monastic training are reported differently in secondary accounts.
