Biography

Short Description

Grigorios Orologas, also known as Gregory Orologas or Gregory of Kydonies, was a Greek Orthodox metropolitan bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate who served the large Greek community of Kydonies (Ayvalık) on the Aegean coast of Asia Minor. He was born in 1864 in Magara in Eastern Thrace, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He received his theological formation at the Theological School of Halki on Heybeliada in the Sea of Marmara, the principal seminary of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and completed his studies in the late nineteenth century. After ordination he worked as a teacher, preacher, and clergyman in posts under the Patriarchate before his elevation to the episcopate.

In the early twentieth century he was elected a metropolitan bishop. He served first as Metropolitan of Strumica in Macedonia and, from 1908, as Metropolitan of Kydonies. Ayvalık was then a predominantly Greek Orthodox coastal town with a strong commercial, educational, and ecclesiastical life. As metropolitan he was responsible for the spiritual care of the diocese, its schools and charitable work, and its dealings with Ottoman and later occupying authorities during an era of wars and rising ethnic nationalism. He remained in his see through the Balkan Wars, the First World War, and the period of Greek military presence in western Asia Minor after 1919.

In September 1922, after the collapse of the Greek army in Anatolia, Turkish nationalist forces entered Ayvalık. Metropolitan Gregory did not abandon his flock. He was arrested together with other Orthodox clergy and leading members of the Greek community. Greek contemporary accounts and later historical writing describe his detention, humiliation, and execution by Turkish forces in the autumn of 1922. The precise day of death is reported with some variation in the sources, but it belongs to the mass violence, killings of clergy, and expulsions that accompanied the end of the Greek presence in Asia Minor, known in Greek historiography as the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Orologas is remembered in the Greek Orthodox tradition as a hieromartyr of the early twentieth century and as an example of a bishop who stayed with his people under persecution. He is numbered among the new martyrs associated with the destruction of the Orthodox communities of Asia Minor in 1922. Details of his burial are not securely recorded in readily available historical sources, which is consistent with the chaotic circumstances of the killings and deportations of that year.
