Biography

Grzegorz Bolesław Frąckowiak was born Bolesław Frąckowiak on 18 July 1911 in Łęczyca in Greater Poland, a Polish-inhabited region then under Prussian administration in the German Empire. He was raised in a Catholic family and as a youth entered the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini), the missionary congregation founded in the late nineteenth century by Arnold Janssen. In religion he took the name Grzegorz. His gifts were practical rather than academic, and he became a professed brother rather than a priest, serving the Polish province of the congregation as a typesetter and printer.

In the interwar Polish Republic the Divine Word Missionaries maintained houses of formation and a publishing apostolate that produced missionary periodicals and religious literature. Brother Grzegorz worked in that press apostolate. After Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, religious houses were suppressed or confiscated, Catholic publishing was forbidden or tightly controlled, and many members of his congregation were arrested or sent to concentration camps. In those conditions he used his trade to produce clandestine materials prohibited by the occupation authorities, activity that under Nazi rule could be punished by death.

He was arrested by the Gestapo in connection with underground printing. Accounts preserved in the documentation for his beatification relate that he accepted responsibility in a manner that shielded others involved in the work. After imprisonment he was condemned to death. On 5 May 1943, at the age of thirty-one, he was executed by beheading in Dresden. His death belonged to the wider Nazi persecution of the Polish Church, in which thousands of priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed.

On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified 108 Polish martyrs of the Second World War during a Mass in Warsaw; Grzegorz Frąckowiak was among them. The group, known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II, is liturgically commemorated on 12 June. He has not been canonized. Within the Society of the Divine Word and the Church in Poland he is remembered as a brother whose ordinary skill as a printer became a form of witness under occupation, and who remained faithful unto death.
