Biography

Short Description

Saint Gudula (also known as Gudule or Goedele) was a Christian holy woman of the later seventh and early eighth centuries from Brabant in the Frankish kingdom, in what is now Belgium. Medieval tradition places her birth at Moorsel, near Aalst in present-day East Flanders. She is described as the daughter of Count Witger and Saint Amalberga of Maubeuge. After the birth of their children, Witger is said to have entered the monastery of Lobbes and Amalberga the convent of Maubeuge. The same family tradition names as her siblings Saint Reineldis, Saint Pharaildis, and Saint Emebert (sometimes identified with Ablebert, a bishop of Cambrai). These kinship claims belong to later Brabantine hagiography rather than to contemporary charters, but they consistently locate Gudula among the high Frankish aristocracy of the region.

Her godmother was Saint Gertrude of Nivelles, abbess of the double monastery at Nivelles, who undertook Gudula’s religious education. Gertrude died in the mid-seventh century, which is the principal chronological anchor for Gudula’s youth and helps explain why modern writers place Gudula’s life in the second half of the seventh century and the beginning of the eighth. After her formation at Nivelles, Gudula did not remain in the cloister as a nun of a formal religious order. She returned to the family estates at Moorsel and lived there as a consecrated virgin, devoted to prayer, fasting, and works of charity. The sources present her as unmarried and without children.

The episode that later defined her iconography is the lantern miracle. According to the legend, she rose before dawn to walk from Moorsel to the church at nearby Hamme in order to assist at the Divine Office. She carried a lantern, which the devil repeatedly extinguished in order to make her lose the path; each time the flame was miraculously restored through her prayer. In medieval and early modern art she is therefore shown with a lantern, sometimes with a demon at her feet. The story is hagiographical rather than independently documented, but it is the core of her later cult image and of local devotion in Brabant.

The year of her death is not known with certainty. Writers from the Middle Ages onward assign it to 8 January at some point between the late seventh and the early eighth century, often toward the beginning of the eighth. She died at Moorsel and was first buried there, or according to some accounts at Hamme. In the later tenth century Duke Charles of Lower Lorraine had her relics translated from Moorsel to the chapel of Saint Gaugericus (Saint Géry) on an island in the Senne at Brussels. In the mid-eleventh century the relics were moved again to the collegiate church of Saint Michael in Brussels, which thereafter bore her name as well and in time became the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, the principal church of the city and later of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Relics associated with her suffered in the religious upheavals of the sixteenth century.

Gudula is honoured as the patron saint of Brussels; her feast is kept on 8 January. No papal bull of canonization from the later centralized Roman process survives, her sanctity belonging to the age of popular and episcopal recognition before those procedures. Historical knowledge of her life depends almost entirely on hagiographical texts written well after her death, notably an eleventh-century life associated with Hubert of Brabant and related local traditions. Precise biographical dates and many narrative details cannot be confirmed from contemporary documents. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a woman of the Frankish aristocracy in Brabant, connected in memory with the circle of Gertrude of Nivelles, was venerated from the early Middle Ages as a virgin saint, and that Brussels adopted her as a civic patron whose name remains attached to its cathedral.
