Biography

Short Description

Guerric of Igny was a Cistercian abbot and spiritual writer of the twelfth century, born at Tournai in Flanders, in what is now Belgium. The precise year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources. He was educated at the cathedral school of Tournai, then a noted centre of learning in the Low Countries, and in time became a canon of the cathedral chapter and a master in its school. For many years he remained a secular cleric, acquiring a reputation for learning and for a devout life while teaching and serving in the cathedral milieu rather than entering a monastery.

Drawn to the Cistercian reform, Guerric left Tournai and entered the abbey of Clairvaux during the abbacy of Bernard of Clairvaux, most likely in the 1120s. There he was formed in the observances and spirituality of the new order. In 1138 Bernard sent him to Igny, a daughter-house of Clairvaux in the diocese of Reims in Champagne, to serve as abbot. Guerric was the second abbot of that house. Cistercian tradition remembers him as reluctant to accept prelacy, a trait associated with the humility for which he was later venerated. He governed Igny for some two decades, until his death.

Guerric is known above all for a collection of fifty-four liturgical sermons that survive from his years as abbot. Preached to his community across the liturgical year, they treat the mysteries of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the monastic life. They are marked by close attention to Scripture, dependence on the Latin Fathers, and a Cistercian emphasis on the interior formation of Christ in the soul. Together with the works of Bernard of Clairvaux, William of Saint-Thierry, and Aelred of Rievaulx, they form an important witness to early Cistercian theology and spirituality. Guerric’s voice is often described as gentler and more homiletic than Bernard’s, yet theologically substantial.

He died at Igny on 19 August 1157 and was buried at the abbey. The Cistercian Order has long venerated him as Blessed Guerric of Igny and keeps his feast on 19 August. He was not the subject of a widely documented papal canonization of the later medieval or modern formal type; his cult belongs to Cistercian liturgical commemoration. His sermons continued to be read in monastic circles and have been edited and studied in modern times as a major source for twelfth-century Cistercian thought.
