Biography

Short Description

Saint Wicbert (also known as Guibert or Wibert of Gembloux; Latin Wicbertus or Guibertus) was a tenth-century Lotharingian nobleman and Benedictine monk, remembered as the founder of the Abbey of Gembloux in the region of Namur, in what is now Belgium. He came from a wealthy aristocratic family in Lotharingia, the middle Frankish realm lying between East and West Francia. No contemporary record of his birth or childhood survives, and later writers give only a conventional picture of high birth and an early life spent in the world. Monastic tradition associated with Gembloux presents him as a man who had known secular, and perhaps military, service before turning his inheritance to a religious foundation and taking the habit himself.

Around the middle of the tenth century, commonly dated to about 936, Wicbert established a monastery on his own estates at Gembloux (Gemblacum). He endowed the house from his patrimonial lands and introduced Benedictine observance by bringing monks from the Abbey of Gorze, near Metz, then a leading centre of monastic reform in Lotharingia. Erluin (also called Herluin) became the first abbot. Wicbert did not remain as founder-abbot. He entered Gorze as an ordinary monk, a choice later hagiography treats as humility: he left the government of Gembloux to others and submitted to the regular discipline of a reformed house.

He died at Gorze on 23 May 962. His memory was cultivated above all at Gembloux, to which his relics were later translated and where a cult of the founder took shape. In the eleventh century the monk Sigebert of Gembloux wrote on the history of the abbey and on its founder, and it is largely through that later monastic tradition that Wicbert’s life is known. Gembloux became an important Benedictine abbey; Wicbert’s feast has traditionally been kept on 23 May. He was venerated as a saint in the medieval Church without a surviving record of a formal papal canonization of the later centralized type. His cult belongs to the age of local and monastic recognition of sanctity.

Almost every personal detail beyond the foundation of Gembloux, his profession at Gorze, and the traditional date and place of his death depends on later medieval narrative rather than on tenth-century charters or independent chronicles. Family connections, the exact course of his early career, and any marriage or children before he became a monk are not securely documented. What can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is his role as noble founder of Gembloux, his life as a Benedictine at Gorze, and the transmission of his feast and relics through the abbey he had established.
