Biography

Short Description

Guido Maria Conforti was born in 1865 at Casalora di Ravadese, a rural locality near Parma in Emilia in northern Italy, the eighth of ten children of Rinaldo Conforti and Antonia Adorni. Raised in a Catholic household, he showed an early attraction to prayer; biographies of him repeatedly note his boyhood devotion before a crucifix in the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Parma, an image that remained central to his later spirituality. He entered the diocesan seminary of Parma as a boy and was ordained a priest in 1888. As a young priest he taught in the seminary and took on diocesan duties, while cultivating a strong devotion to Saint Francis Xavier and a desire to share in the foreign missions of the Catholic Church.

In 1895 he founded the Pia Società di San Francesco Saverio per le Missioni Estere, known in English as the Xaverian Missionaries, a society of apostolic life dedicated to evangelization beyond Europe. He obtained ecclesiastical approval for the institute and remained its superior while continuing his work in the Diocese of Parma, where he later served as vicar general. Although he wished to go to the missions himself, his bishops and the Holy See kept him in Italy. At the end of the nineteenth century the first Xaverian missionaries were sent to China. Conforti thus linked a local Italian vocation with a lasting missionary foundation.

Pope Leo XIII named him Archbishop of Ravenna in 1902. He was consecrated that year, but after a brief tenure marked by poor health he resigned the see in 1904. In 1907 he was appointed Bishop of Parma, retaining the personal title of archbishop, and he governed that diocese until his death. In Parma he promoted catechesis, the formation of clergy, Catholic associations, and systematic pastoral visitation, while continuing to direct the Xaverian Missionaries and to support their work in East Asia. His episcopal style was described by contemporaries as combining discipline with pastoral closeness, and his inner life as strongly Christocentric, focused on the crucified Jesus.

Conforti died in Parma in 1931. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1996 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. His liturgical memorial is kept on 5 November. He is remembered as the founder of the Xaverian Missionaries and as a bishop who joined the care of a northern Italian diocese with a missionary impulse that outlived him in the Catholic Church of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
