Biography

Short Description

Guido Vidal França Schäffer was born on 22 May 1974 in Volta Redonda, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the son of Guilherme Schäffer and Maria Nazareth França Schäffer. He was raised in a Catholic family and spent his formative years in the greater Rio de Janeiro area. After secondary school he studied medicine at the Fundação Técnico-Educacional Souza Marques in Rio de Janeiro and qualified as a physician in the late 1990s. He then practiced in the city’s public health system, including work at the Hospital Municipal Lourenço Jorge in Barra da Tijuca. Colleagues and patients remembered him for treating people who could not pay, for visiting the sick in poorer neighborhoods, and for combining clinical care with personal kindness.

Schäffer was also a dedicated surfer and a familiar figure on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. His adult Christian life was strongly shaped by the Neocatechumenal Way, a Catholic itinerary of formation in which he was an active member. Through prayer, community, and the sacraments he discerned a vocation to the priesthood and entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. He was never ordained; he remained a diocesan seminarian until his death. During formation he continued to practice medicine as a form of service, seeking to attend both to bodily illness and to the spiritual needs of those he met. Those who knew him described a joyful temperament, readiness to give time and resources, and a particular concern for the marginalized.

On 1 May 2009, while surfing at Recreio dos Bandeirantes in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro, Schäffer drowned. He was thirty-four years old. News of his death spread quickly among surfers, medical colleagues, and members of Neocatechumenal communities. His funeral drew a large crowd, and those who spoke of him emphasized the coherence of his professional work, his sport, and his Christian commitment. In popular memory he came to be called the anjo surfista, or surfer angel.

In the years that followed, devotion to Schäffer developed especially among young people and athletes along the Rio coastline, and reports of favors attributed to his intercession began to circulate. The Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro opened a canonical inquiry into his life, virtues, and reputation for holiness, introducing a cause for beatification. The cause later proceeded at the Holy See, and he has been honored with the title Venerable after a recognition of heroic virtue. He has not been beatified or canonized, and the Church has assigned him no official feast day or patronages. His biography is that of a Brazilian physician and diocesan seminarian of the turn of the twenty-first century who sought to live the Gospel in ordinary professional work and in the surfing culture of Rio de Janeiro.
