Biography

Short Description

Guillaume Repin was born on 26 August 1709 in Thouarcé, in Anjou in western France (today in the department of Maine-et-Loire). He was formed for the diocesan priesthood and ordained for the diocese of Angers. Over a long clerical career he served in pastoral posts in the diocese and rose to become a canon of Angers Cathedral and vicar general, one of the senior priests assisting the bishop. He belonged to the secular clergy rather than to a religious order and lived under the ordinary discipline of priestly celibacy.

The French Revolution brought a direct confrontation between the new state and the Catholic Church. In 1790 the Civil Constitution of the Clergy reorganized the French Church under civil authority and required priests to swear an oath of loyalty. Repin, like many clergy who held that the measure usurped papal and episcopal rights, refused the oath and was therefore treated as a refractory or non-juring priest. Non-jurors were barred from public ministry, exposed to arrest, and, as the Revolution radicalized, liable to death.

During the Reign of Terror he was arrested in the Angers region and imprisoned. On 2 January 1794 a revolutionary tribunal condemned him, and he was executed by guillotine in Angers. He was eighty-four years old, among the oldest of the clergy put to death in that wave of persecution. His execution belonged to a larger series of killings of priests, women religious, and lay Catholics in Anjou in 1793–1794, in the same western France that was also the scene of the Vendée rising.

On 19 February 1984 Pope John Paul II beatified Guillaume Repin together with ninety-eight companions from the diocese of Angers—priests, nuns, and lay men and women put to death for their faith in those years. The group is known as Blessed Guillaume Repin and Companions, or the Martyrs of Angers. Their liturgical commemoration is 2 January. Repin has not been canonized. Place of burial after the guillotine is not securely recorded in the sources commonly cited for his life.
