Biography

Short Description

Gulstà de Rhuys, known in French as Saint Goustan (also Goulstan, Gulstan, or Gustan), was a Breton Benedictine monk of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries, venerated in Brittany as a patron of sailors and fishermen. Traditional Breton hagiography places his birth around 974 in Cornouaille in western Brittany. Nothing about his family or exact birthplace can be established from contemporary documents. The medieval lives relate that as a young man, at about eighteen, he was seized by pirates, lived among them, and took part in their raids. During a violent storm he is said to have called upon God; the ship was spared, and the experience led him to abandon that life.

He then sought admission to the Abbey of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys on the Rhuys peninsula in the Morbihan. The house, associated with the sixth-century Saint Gildas, had been restored in the early eleventh century under Abbot Felix with the support of the dukes of Brittany. Goustan received the Benedictine habit and was given the office of cook. The traditional accounts describe him as exceptionally charitable, distributing food from the monastic kitchen to the poor and to seafarers. Miracle stories attached to his name include the multiplication of provisions so that the community did not go without, and interventions that calmed storms and rescued those in danger on the water. These maritime miracles underlie his later reputation as a protector of sailors.

According to the same tradition he died at the abbey on 27 November 1040 and was buried there. His cult remained essentially local to Brittany. The river port of Auray developed a strong devotion to him; its harbour quarter is still called Saint-Goustan, and he is regarded as a patron of that town as well as of fishermen and sailors more generally. Relics have been associated with the abbey of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys and with churches dedicated to him. His feast is kept on 27 November. Like many earlier medieval Breton saints, he was not the object of a formal papal canonization; his status rests on continuous local veneration.

No contemporary documentary evidence survives that would allow a fully critical biography. The details of his early life among pirates and of particular miracles belong to hagiographical tradition rather than independently verified history. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a monk named Goustan or Gulstan was venerated at Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys in the eleventh century, that he was remembered as a monastic cook of great charity, and that his cult became closely linked with seafaring communities on the Breton coast. He lived and died as a professed Benedictine and is not recorded as having married or having had children. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.
