Biography

Short Description

Gundekar II (also rendered Gundechar, Gundakar, or Gunzo) was a German prelate of the eleventh century who governed the Diocese of Eichstätt from 1057 until his death. He was born in 1019 into a noble family whose precise lineage and place of origin are not securely recorded, though his career unfolded entirely within the ecclesiastical and courtly world of the Salian kingdom of Germany. He received a clerical education and became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Bamberg, an Ottonian foundation closely tied to the imperial church. From Bamberg he was drawn into the household of the Salian court, serving as chaplain to Empress Agnes of Poitou, consort of Emperor Henry III and later regent for their son Henry IV. That court service placed him among the clerics through whom the Salian rulers staffed important bishoprics.

In 1057, during Agnes’s regency, Gundekar was appointed Bishop of Eichstätt, a Bavarian see founded in the eighth century by Saint Willibald. He was consecrated the same year and held the diocese for eighteen years, a period that saw the last years of relative cooperation between the German crown and the papacy and the first stirrings of the conflict later known as the Investiture Controversy. As bishop he acted as both spiritual pastor and temporal lord of a sizable church estate. He promoted the cult of Willibald, the diocesan founder, dedicated numerous churches and altars (many of which are listed in records associated with his pontificate), and sought to defend the rights and property of his church. Contemporary memory presents him as an austere and conscientious prelate rather than as a political warrior-bishop, though like other imperial bishops he remained part of the Salian ecclesiastical system.

Gundekar’s principal and most distinctive legacy is the manuscript known as the Pontificale Gundekarianum (or Codex Gundekarianus), produced under his direction about 1071–1072. The book combines a full set of pontifical liturgical rites—ordinations, church dedications, blessings, and other episcopal ceremonies—with a unique illustrated chronicle of the bishops of Eichstätt from Willibald down to Gundekar himself. Each bishop is given a painted portrait and a brief notice; later occupants of the see continued the series, so that the codex became a living memorial of the diocese. The manuscript is a primary source for the history of Eichstätt, for eleventh-century pontifical liturgy, and for the art of illumination in the Salian period. It also records many of Gundekar’s own consecrations, giving unusual documentary density to his episcopate compared with that of most of his contemporaries.

Gundekar died on 2 August 1075, almost certainly in Eichstätt, and was buried in his cathedral. Local veneration of him as a holy bishop began after his death; in the Catholic tradition he has long been honored as Blessed Gundekar, with a feast on the anniversary of his death, especially in the Diocese of Eichstätt. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type, and no Roman confirmation of cult is recorded in the modern sense. His historical importance rests on his role as a reforming and liturgically minded imperial bishop and on the survival of the Gundekarianum, one of the most remarkable episcopal books of the Central Middle Ages and a foundation for the later historiography of the see of Eichstätt.
