Biography

Short Description

Guthlac of Crowland was an Anglo-Saxon hermit and saint of the late seventh and early eighth centuries, known principally from the near-contemporary Latin Vita Sancti Guthlaci written by the monk Felix around the 730s at the request of King Ælfwald of East Anglia. Felix presents him as a member of the Mercian royal kindred, of the stock of Icel, son of the nobleman Penwalh (Penwald) and of Tette. He was born in Mercia, in the country of the Middle Angles, during the reign of King Æthelred. Felix reports a miraculous sign at his birth and associates his name with the Guthlacingas. In adolescence, at about the age of fifteen, he took up the life of a warrior and led a warband on the Mercian frontiers, seizing booty yet, according to Felix, restoring a portion of it to those he had plundered. After some nine years of this martial career he underwent a conversion, reflecting on the transience of earthly kingdoms and the deaths of ancient kings, and resolved to enter the monastic life.

He received the tonsure and monastic habit at the double monastery of Repton in Mercia, then under the abbess Ælfthryth. There he became known for severe self-denial, including abstinence from alcoholic drink, which at first provoked dislike among some of the community. After about two years at Repton he sought a stricter solitude. Informed of a remote island called Crowland (Croyland) in the desolate marshes of the Lincolnshire Fens, he established himself there as a hermit around the turn of the eighth century. He made his dwelling in a chamber dug into an ancient burial mound, wore skins, lived on barley bread and water, and practised prolonged fasting and vigil. Felix’s narrative, which draws on Athanasius’s Life of Antony and related desert literature, describes repeated assaults by demons, who appear in monstrous shapes or as a host of Britons speaking the British tongue; Guthlac overcomes them by prayer and the sign of the cross. These episodes have been read both as hagiographical convention and as a window onto the cultural landscape of the Fenland frontier.

At Crowland Guthlac acquired a reputation for prophecy, spiritual counsel, and miracles. He was visited by ecclesiastics and lay nobles. Bishop Headda of Lichfield came to the island, consecrated his oratory, and ordained him to the priesthood. His sister Pega, herself a recluse later associated with Peakirk, remained important in his life and attended to his burial. Among his most significant relationships was that with Æthelbald, a Mercian ætheling then living in exile in the marshes; Felix reports that Guthlac foretold Æthelbald’s future accession to the Mercian throne, which took place in 716. Guthlac’s attendant Beccel was present in his last days. He fell ill and died at Crowland on 11 April; the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the year as 714. He was buried in his oratory. Felix and later tradition report miracles at the tomb.

Soon after his death a monastic community gathered at Crowland. King Æthelbald is credited with founding or endowing a monastery over the hermit’s resting place, which developed into Crowland Abbey, a Benedictine house and a major medieval pilgrimage site. Guthlac’s cult spread in Anglo-Saxon England; his feast was kept on 11 April. Besides Felix’s Latin life, Old English verse lives known as Guthlac A and Guthlac B survive in the Exeter Book, and a later illustrated Guthlac Roll attests to the continuation of his legend. The shrine at Crowland remained a focus of devotion until the Dissolution. He is the patron saint of Crowland. Modern historians treat Felix as a valuable though stylized source for Mercian politics, Fenland settlement, and early English eremiticism, while remaining cautious about precise chronology and about details shaped by hagiographical models.
