Biography

Short Description

Gwen Teirbron, known in Breton as Gwenn Teirvron, in French as Sainte Blanche or Sainte Gwenn, and in Latin as Alba Trimammis or Candida, is a Breton saint customarily placed in the fifth or sixth century. The Welsh epithet Teirbron means three-breasted, a title that later shaped both her legend and her visual cult. Hagiographical writers present her as a woman of princely Armorican family, most often as a daughter of Budic II of Brittany, the ruler whom Welsh genealogies call Emyr Llydaw. No contemporary document names her. What survives comes from later saintly pedigrees, from medieval lives of her sons, and from early modern Breton compilations, above all Albert Le Grand's seventeenth-century collection of the lives of the saints of Armorica. Modern historians therefore treat her as a figure of tradition rather than as a person whose career can be reconstructed in detail.

In the dominant Breton account she was the wife of Fragan, also spelled Fracan, a nobleman said to have left Britain for Armorica amid the troubles that accompanied the Anglo-Saxon advance. The couple are linked with districts of western Brittany, notably the Goëlo region around Ploufragan, whose name preserves Fragan's, and with Plouguin in Léon, where their son Winwaloe is said to have been born. Tradition ascribes to them four children who themselves became saints: Winwaloe, or Guénolé, founder of the abbey of Landévennec; Jacut; Guethenoc; and a daughter, Creirwy, also called Clervie. The various medieval vitae of Winwaloe are the principal literary channel through which Gwen's memory was transmitted, even though those texts are concerned with the abbot rather than with his mother.

A distinct Welsh tradition, recorded in the genealogical collection Bonedd y Saint, makes Gwen Teirbron the daughter of Emyr Llydaw, the wife of Eneas Ledewig, and the mother of Saint Cadfan, the missionary of Tywyn in Meirionnydd and a figure associated with Bardsey Island. Scholars of Celtic hagiography usually regard the Breton and Welsh notices as overlapping or conflated cycles rather than as two independent biographies. The shared epithet and the Armorican father suggest that medieval compilers were arranging a single legendary kindred across the Channel. Neither tradition supplies verifiable dates, and the political map of fifth- and sixth-century Brittany is itself only fragmentarily known.

Later legend dwelt on the epithet three-breasted. Albert Le Grand related that God granted Gwen a third breast in order that she might nurse an additional child, thereby tying her bodily miracle to her role as mother of saints. In popular Breton devotion the image made her a helper of nursing mothers. A number of chapels and churches in Brittany housed statues of a three-breasted woman identified as Sainte Gwenn or Sainte Blanche. Some of these figures survived into modern times; others were recarved with two breasts under the influence of later clerical standards of decorum. The cult remained regional and largely folkloric. There is no record of a formal papal canonization, and her veneration belongs to the pre-Congregation era of local recognition.

Because Gwen Teirbron exists at the intersection of Breton and Welsh saintly genealogies, her years of birth and death, the place of her burial, and any possible later religious profession are unknown. She is honored as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church and appears in some Eastern Orthodox lists of western saints, yet the historical individual, if one stands behind the name, cannot be isolated from the legendary mother of a group of Armorican monastic founders. Her importance for religious history lies in the use of a maternal figure to bind together several local cults, and in an iconography that, however startling to later taste, made her a focus of women's devotion in Brittany for many centuries.
