Biography

Short Description

Hartmann of Brixen (Hartmann von Brixen) was a Catholic bishop and saint of the twelfth century, remembered as a reformer, monastic organizer, and pastor in the German-speaking lands of the Holy Roman Empire. Traditional biographies, which rest more on later hagiographical tradition than on a rich contemporary documentary record, place his birth around 1090 in Polling in Bavaria. The precise year is not attested, and even the locality is not beyond dispute: some accounts specify Oberpolling in the Passau region, others Polling in Upper Bavaria. What is clearer is that he belonged to a milieu of Bavarian clergy formed in the aftermath of the Gregorian Reform. He was educated at the cathedral school of Salzburg, then a principal center of learning and church reform in the southeast of the Empire, and he became a canon of the cathedral chapter there.

Seeking a more regular and austere common life than that of a secular cathedral canon, Hartmann entered the house of Augustinian Canons Regular at St. Nikola in Passau. The Canons Regular, living under the Rule of Saint Augustine, combined clerical ministry with a monastic-style community life and were an important instrument of reform in the twelfth century. His abilities as a spiritual leader and organizer brought him to the attention of Margrave Leopold III of Austria (later Saint Leopold), who in 1133 called him to serve as the first provost of the newly founded Augustinian monastery of Klosterneuburg, on the Danube near Vienna. At Klosterneuburg Hartmann laid the foundations of the community’s liturgical, intellectual, and economic life; the house would remain one of the great canonical foundations of Austria. His tenure there established his reputation beyond Bavaria and the Austrian march.

In 1140 King Conrad III appointed Hartmann to the see of Brixen (Italian: Bressanone), a prince-bishopric controlling Alpine passes between Germany and Italy and thus of both spiritual and political significance. He governed the diocese for some twenty-four years. Later vitae emphasize his personal poverty and fasting, his care for the sick and the poor, and his efforts to raise the moral and educational standard of the clergy. He is credited with founding or supporting hospitals and religious houses in the diocese. In the wider church he lived through the troubled years of the Alexandrine schism that began in 1159. Like many reform-minded prelates in the German church, he recognized Pope Alexander III rather than the imperial antipope, a choice that aligned him with the papacy against Frederick Barbarossa’s ecclesiastical policy, though the details of his political activity are sparsely documented.

Hartmann died in Brixen on 23 December 1164 and was interred in his cathedral. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and a local cult developed that treated him as a saintly bishop. He was never canonized according to the formal papal procedures that became standard in later centuries; his sanctity was a matter of popular and diocesan veneration, later acknowledged in liturgical calendars of the Diocese of Brixen (today Bolzano-Brixen) and in various martyrologies. His feast day is 23 December. Historical knowledge of his life remains limited: no extensive contemporary vita survives from his inner circle, and much of what is repeated in modern accounts derives from later medieval and early modern compilations. Even so, the outline of a reform canon who became a reforming bishop, connected to Saint Leopold and to the Augustinian canonical movement, is well enough attested to place him among the notable German churchmen of the mid-twelfth century.
