Biography

Short Description

Hartwig was a Bavarian nobleman of the Aribonid family who became archbishop of Salzburg in the last decade of the tenth century. He was a son of Hartwig I, Count Palatine of Bavaria, and of Wichburg. The Aribonids ranked among the foremost aristocratic kindreds of the duchy and were closely connected with the Ottonian royal house. No contemporary source records the year or place of Hartwig’s birth, and nothing detailed survives concerning his education or the lesser ecclesiastical offices he may have held before his elevation to the metropolitan see. As was typical for a younger son of high nobility in this period, he entered the clergy and rose through the Ottonian Reichskirche rather than through a documented monastic profession.

In 991 King Otto III appointed Hartwig archbishop of Salzburg in succession to Archbishop Frederick. The see of Salzburg was one of the principal bishoprics of the German kingdom: its archbishop was metropolitan of a large province covering much of Bavaria and the eastern Alps and exercised both spiritual jurisdiction and considerable temporal power, including missionary responsibilities toward neighboring Slavic populations. Hartwig’s appointment fit the established Ottonian practice of filling vacant bishoprics with nobles expected to serve as royal counsellors and territorial administrators. He remained a supporter of Otto III. In 996 he travelled with the king to Italy and was present in Rome when Otto was crowned emperor by Pope Gregory V. He continued to appear in the emperor’s entourage during the Italian campaigns of the following years.

Otto III died in Italy in January 1002 without a direct heir. In the ensuing succession Hartwig, whose roots lay in Bavaria, supported Duke Henry of Bavaria, who was elected king as Henry II. Henry II confirmed the rights and properties of the church of Salzburg early in his reign, thereby strengthening the material basis of the archbishopric. Hartwig’s long pontificate thus spanned the close of Otto III’s reign and the whole of Henry II’s kingship and emperorship until the archbishop’s own death. Charters from this period document the defence and organization of Salzburg’s estates and privileges under his rule.

As archbishop for thirty-two years, Hartwig administered the spiritual and temporal affairs of a vast diocese. Surviving royal diplomata and episcopal acts show him participating in the public life of the realm rather than as the subject of a personal narrative or saint’s life. Salzburg’s traditional missionary orientation toward Slavic lands formed part of the background of his office, though specific missionary initiatives personally attributed to him are not richly documented. Hartwig died on 5 December 1023 and was succeeded by Gunther. No medieval vita was written about him, and he did not acquire a liturgical feast or a recognized cult. The historical record of his career is therefore that of a prince-bishop of the Ottonian church: known through royal diplomas, his presence at court and in Italy, and the institutional memory of the archbishopric of Salzburg, rather than through hagiography.
