Biography

Short Description

Hathumar, whose name also appears as Hathemar or Hadumar, was a Saxon churchman of the early ninth century and the first bishop of Paderborn. Reliable sources do not record the year or place of his birth. He is described as being of Saxon origin, and later Paderborn tradition holds that he came from a noble family. During Charlemagne's long wars of conquest and conversion in Saxony, young Saxons were frequently taken as hostages and educated in Frankish ecclesiastical schools. Hathumar is reported to have been raised and trained at Würzburg, at the cathedral community associated with the cult of Saint Kilian, which would have given him a Latin clerical education and bound him to the Carolingian church rather than to the still incompletely converted Saxon elite from which he came.

The bishopric of Paderborn was created as part of Charlemagne's program to organize the church in Saxony after decades of conflict. Paderborn already possessed a royal palace and a church and had been the scene of major political events, including the stay of Pope Leo III in 799. The diocese itself is generally dated to about 805 or 806. Hathumar was appointed its first bishop and consecrated in that period. His charge was to establish a lasting episcopal see among a recently subdued population, to promote Christian practice, and to represent Frankish ecclesiastical authority in eastern Saxony. The new diocese stood in the orbit of the Rhineland and Westphalian church, and Hathumar's Würzburg formation linked him to an older Frankish missionary center at a time when Saxon pagan custom had only recently been suppressed by law and by force.

Almost nothing of Hathumar's day-to-day episcopate has been preserved in contemporary narrative sources. No sermons, letters, or synodal acts in his name are known, and the early charters of the see are sparse. He is attested principally as the first in the succession of Paderborn bishops. Upon his death he was succeeded by Badurad, whose longer pontificate is somewhat better documented and who is credited in later tradition with consolidating the diocese and developing its cathedral church. Hathumar died on 9 August 815. Surviving notices do not describe the circumstances of his death; given that he died in office, Paderborn is the place usually associated with his last years.

Because the written record is thin, later medieval and early modern historians of the Diocese of Paderborn treated Hathumar as a founding figure and sometimes surrounded him with pious local memory. He is not clearly established in the principal universal martyrologies as a canonized saint with a widely observed cult, nor are specific patronages securely attached to his name in the major hagiographical collections. His historical importance lies in his role at the beginning of the organized diocesan church in Paderborn during the Carolingian settlement of Saxony, rather than in a richly documented personal vita.
