Biography

Short Description

Hedwig of Silesia, also known as Hedwig of Andechs (Polish: Jadwiga Śląska; German: Hedwig von Andechs or Hedwig von Schlesien), was born in the later twelfth century at Andechs Castle in Bavaria, within the Holy Roman Empire. She was a daughter of Count Berthold IV of Andechs, who became Duke of Merania, and of Agnes of Rochlitz of the Wettin family. Through this parentage she belonged to one of the leading noble houses of the empire. Her siblings included Gertrude of Merania, queen of Hungary and mother of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary; Agnes of Merania, who married King Philip II of France; Ekbert, bishop of Bamberg; and Berthold, patriarch of Aquileia. Hedwig was educated at the Benedictine monastery of Kitzingen in Franconia. In her early adolescence, in the mid-1180s, she was married to Henry, a Piast prince later known as Henry I the Bearded, who became Duke of Silesia and, in the 1230s, High Duke of Poland. She should not be confused with Saint Jadwiga, the later Angevin queen of Poland, who is a distinct figure.

As duchess, Hedwig used her rank and resources in support of the Church and of the poor in Silesia. Together with her husband she founded the Cistercian convent at Trzebnica in the opening years of the thirteenth century, bringing nuns from Bamberg; it was the first house of women religious in Silesia. She also promoted other ecclesiastical foundations, hospitals, and the care of lepers and the destitute. Later hagiographical tradition describes an austere personal life of fasting, prayer, going barefoot, and personal service to the sick, even while she remained a great lady of the Piast court, whose principal seat was at Wrocław. The couple had several children, among them Henry II, later called the Pious, and Gertrude, who became abbess of Trzebnica; other children died young. After they had raised their family, Hedwig and Henry are reported to have taken a vow of continence and to have lived thereafter in chastity while continuing their public duties.

Henry I died in 1238. Hedwig then withdrew to the convent at Trzebnica, where she lived in simplicity among the nuns. Reliable accounts stress that she did not take formal religious vows, in order that she might still dispose of her property for charitable purposes. In 1241 her son Henry II was killed at the Battle of Legnica during the Mongol invasion of the region. Tradition holds that she received the news of this disaster with Christian resignation. She spent her remaining years at Trzebnica in prayer and works of mercy and died there on 15 October 1243. She was buried in the convent church.

Her cult spread quickly in Silesia and in related German and Polish lands. Pope Clement IV canonized her in 1267. Her feast is observed on 16 October in the General Roman Calendar (her day of death, 15 October, being occupied by another feast). She is venerated as the principal patron of Silesia and is also invoked as a patron of brides, widows, duchesses, and those who have suffered the death of children. Churches dedicated to her, including the cathedral in Berlin and the basilica at Trzebnica, reflect her standing in both Polish and German Catholic memory, and she has often been invoked in later centuries as a figure of piety spanning the German-Polish frontier of Silesia.
