Biography

Short Description

Hegesippus was a Christian writer and chronicler of the second century, known almost exclusively through fragments preserved by the fourth-century historian Eusebius of Caesarea in the Ecclesiastical History. Eusebius presents him as a convert from among the Hebrews who was acquainted with Hebrew, Syriac, and Jewish oral tradition, and who also knew a Gospel according to the Hebrews. Later tradition sometimes styles him Hegesippus the Nazarene. No contemporary source records the place or exact date of his birth, and modern estimates placing his birth in the early second century remain conjectural.

His principal composition was a work in five books commonly called the Hypomnemata (Memoirs or Memoranda). The complete text is lost; what survives consists of quotations in Eusebius. These fragments show that Hegesippus wrote a historical apology for the apostolic faith against Gnostic and other heretical teachings. He recounted the succession of bishops of the church in Jerusalem, beginning with James the Just, described as the brother of the Lord, and continuing through a series of Jewish-Christian leaders until the disruption caused by the Bar Kokhba revolt in the 130s. He also preserved traditions about the relatives of Jesus, including an account of the grandsons of Jude who were examined by the emperor Domitian and released when they were found to be poor farmers expecting a heavenly rather than earthly kingdom. Another well-known fragment describes the martyrdom of James.

In the middle decades of the second century Hegesippus undertook journeys to confirm the continuity of apostolic teaching. Eusebius reports that he visited Corinth and found the church there remaining in the true doctrine, and that he came to Rome in the time of Bishop Anicetus. At Rome he compiled a list of episcopal succession down to Anicetus and remained through the episcopates of Soter and into that of Eleutherus in the later second century. His stated purpose was to demonstrate that the churches he visited had preserved the faith received from the apostles without innovation, in contrast to the variety of heresies he catalogued.

Subsequent ecclesiastical writers, including Jerome and Photius, mention Hegesippus, but add little independent biographical detail. He is commemorated as a saint in the Roman Martyrology and in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox Church, with a feast on 7 April. The places and circumstances of his death and burial are unknown. Despite the fragmentary state of his writings, Hegesippus remains an important early witness to Jewish-Christian memory in Jerusalem, to concern for apostolic succession, and to the second-century effort to distinguish orthodox tradition from emerging heresies.
