Biography

Short Description

Heimerad, whose name also appears as Heimrad and Haimrad, was a German priest and hermit of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. Almost all that is known of him derives from a single Latin life, the Vita Heimradi, written in the 1070s by Ekkebert, a monk of Hersfeld Abbey, at a time when a cult had already formed around the hermit's grave. According to that narrative, Heimerad was born of humble parents at Meßkirch in Swabia. No contemporary document records the year of his birth. He received little education. He was nevertheless ordained a priest, but his deficient learning and his strange, often difficult behaviour caused him to be rejected by the communities in which he tried to serve.

Heimerad then left his native region and travelled as a pilgrim to Rome and to Jerusalem. After his return he lived as a wandering preacher in the German kingdom, moving through Swabia and into Franconia and Hesse. The vita describes him as poorly dressed, uncouth, and frequently taken for a madman. He was driven from churches and monasteries, mocked, and at times physically abused. For years he had no stable home. Later readers have sometimes seen in this portrait an example of the holy fool, a figure whose sanctity is hidden beneath apparent folly and social failure, though the eleventh-century text itself simply records the contempt in which he was held during his lifetime.

In his final years Heimerad established himself as a hermit on the Hasunger Berg, a prominent hill west of Kassel in northern Hesse, on estates associated with the archbishops of Mainz. There he lived in poverty and solitude, occupied with prayer. He died on 28 June 1019 and was buried at the site of his hermitage. Soon afterwards miracles were reported at the grave, and pilgrims began to come to the hill.

The growth of this local cult led Archbishop Siegfried I of Mainz to found a Benedictine monastery, Hasungen Abbey, on the Hasunger Berg in 1074, incorporating the hermit's tomb. It was in this context that Ekkebert of Hersfeld composed the Vita Heimradi, using oral testimony from people who had known Heimerad. The abbey became a regional pilgrimage centre in the later eleventh century, though it later declined amid the conflicts of the twelfth century and never ranked among the great Benedictine houses of Germany.

Heimerad was not canonized by a pope according to the formal procedures of later centuries; his veneration arose from popular devotion and from episcopal support in Mainz and Hesse. He is commemorated on 28 June. A local memory of him also survived at Meßkirch. Reliable sources do not attribute to him a specific list of patronages, nor do they record a wife or children; he lived as a priest and hermit. The historical Heimerad remains an obscure figure whose outline depends on a single hagiographical text written two generations after his death, yet that text is consistent in presenting a poor, unlearned, and widely rejected priest who ended his life as a hermit and was honoured as a saint after he died.
