Biography

Short Description

Heinrich Hahn was a German Catholic physician, politician and pioneer of organized charity who lived and worked in the Rhineland during the nineteenth century. He was born on 29 August 1800 in Aachen, at that time incorporated into the French Republic as part of the département de la Roer. After studying medicine at the universities of Bonn, Heidelberg and Berlin, he settled in his native city as a practising physician, a profession he followed for the greater part of his adult life.

In 1846 Hahn founded in Aachen the first German conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, thereby introducing into the German-speaking world the model of lay Catholic charitable association that Frédéric Ozanam had recently established in Paris. The Aachen conference became the nucleus of a wider Vincentian network in Prussia and the other German states. Hahn devoted himself to the visitation of the poor, the support of families in need, and the promotion of Catholic social initiatives at a time when industrialization was creating new forms of urban poverty.

Hahn also entered public life as a deputy in the Prussian House of Representatives. There he represented the interests of the Catholic population of the Rhineland and spoke on questions of social welfare and religious liberty. His political activity belonged to the broader Catholic movement that sought to defend the Church’s independence and to address the social question through a combination of charity and legislation.

In later years Hahn was associated with efforts to restore the hospitaller work of the Order of Malta in Germany. He remained a respected figure in Aachen’s Catholic community until his death in the same city on 11 March 1882. Hahn was never a member of a religious order and has not been beatified or canonized; he is remembered as a lay apostle of charity and a forerunner of modern Catholic social action in Germany.
