Biography

Short Description

Flavia Julia Helena, known as Helena Augusta and later venerated as Saint Helena, was a Roman empress of the late third and early fourth centuries and the mother of the emperor Constantine I. Ancient writers agree that she came from humble origins. The sixth-century historian Procopius records that Constantine renamed the Bithynian town of Drepanum as Helenopolis in her honor because it was her birthplace; most modern scholars accept Drepanum, on the southern shore of the Gulf of Nicomedia in northwestern Asia Minor, as her likely place of origin. Her social status before her association with the imperial family is described in modest or even unflattering terms by some sources: Ambrose of Milan referred to her as a stabularia, a word that may indicate an innkeeper or a woman of very modest employment connected with stables or lodging houses. In the later third century she became the companion of the Roman officer Flavius Constantius, later known as Constantius Chlorus. Whether the union was a full legal marriage or a recognized concubinage remains debated among historians. When Constantius was appointed Caesar in the Tetrarchy, he set Helena aside in order to marry Theodora, the stepdaughter of the emperor Maximian. Helena lived thereafter in relative obscurity, while her only known child, Constantine, was raised in the East at the court of Diocletian.

Helena’s public standing changed after Constantine was proclaimed emperor in 306 and especially after he became sole ruler of the Roman world in the 320s. Constantine granted her the title Augusta, issued coinage in her name, and associated her publicly with the Christian orientation of the dynasty. Eusebius of Caesarea, writing soon after her death, presents her as a woman of notable piety who had embraced Christianity and who used her wealth and influence for charitable works, including the liberation of prisoners, the relief of the poor, and the restoration of exiles. The precise date and circumstances of her conversion are not recorded in contemporary sources. She does not appear to have belonged to any monastic community or religious order; her role was that of an imperial matron, benefactress, and patron of churches.

In her old age, during the later 320s, Helena undertook a journey to the eastern provinces and to Palestine that became the most famous episode of her life. Eusebius describes her as inspecting the holy places associated with the life of Christ, lavishing gifts on local churches and communities, and founding major basilicas, including the Church of the Nativity at Bethlehem and a church on the Mount of Olives. Later fourth-century writers, among them Ambrose of Milan, Rufinus of Aquileia, Socrates Scholasticus, and Sozomen, added the tradition that she discovered the True Cross and identified the tomb of Christ during excavations at Jerusalem. Eusebius himself does not mention the finding of the Cross; that story is first clearly attested toward the end of the fourth century and thereafter became central to her cult. The pilgrimage also formed part of Constantine’s broader program of monumental Christian building in the Holy Land.

Helena died around the year 330, according to Eusebius at an advanced age of about eighty years, and in the presence of her son. Her remains were placed in a large circular mausoleum that Constantine had constructed for her on the Via Labicana outside Rome, adjoining the cemetery basilica of Saints Marcellinus and Peter. A monumental porphyry sarcophagus traditionally identified as hers is preserved in the Vatican Museums. From the fourth century onward she was honored as a saint in both the Eastern and Western churches. In the Roman calendar her principal feast is kept on 18 August; Eastern churches commemorate her together with Constantine on 21 May. Later devotion made her a patron of archaeologists, converts, and those in difficult marriages, reflecting both the legend of her excavations in Jerusalem and the irregular circumstances of her union with Constantius. Medieval English legends that identified her as a British princess, daughter of King Coel of Colchester, have no support in early sources and are rejected by modern historians.
