Biography

Short Description

Helena de Veszprém, known in Hungarian as Boldog Ilona and sometimes rendered in Latin as Helena Vesprimiensis, was a thirteenth-century nun of the Dominican Order whose memory is tied to the convent of Dominican sisters in Veszprém in the Kingdom of Hungary. Almost no contemporary documentary evidence survives for her life. The notices that exist come from later hagiographic tradition within the Dominican Order and Hungarian Catholic piety. She is venerated as blessed, especially in connection with the childhood religious formation of Saint Margaret of Hungary.

The convent of Dominican nuns at Veszprém was one of the earliest communities of women of the Order of Preachers in Hungary and enjoyed royal support in the mid-thirteenth century. Tradition holds that Princess Margaret, daughter of King Béla IV, was placed in this house as a young child after her parents vowed her to God during the Mongol invasion of Hungary. Helen is remembered as the sister who taught Margaret the rule and observances of the order during the years the princess spent at Veszprém, before Margaret moved to the monastery founded on the Danube island that later bore her name.

Later accounts portray Helen as a contemplative of severe penance who received mystical graces. Some traditions ascribe to her visions, the stigmata, and prophetic insight. These elements belong to the legendary development of her cult and are not corroborated by thirteenth-century records. After she died at Veszprém, a local cult formed around her tomb and miracles were reported. She was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type. Her status as blessed reflects popular veneration and the internal tradition of the Dominican Order.

The limits of the evidence must be acknowledged. Her family origin, the date of her birth, and the exact date of her death are unknown. She remains an obscure figure. Her historical importance, so far as it can be recovered, lies in her place within the Veszprém community and in the traditional role assigned to her in the early education of Saint Margaret of Hungary, one of the principal saints of the Árpád dynasty. Historians therefore treat the miraculous features of her legend with caution while recognizing the documented existence and royal connections of the Veszprém Dominican convent in the thirteenth century.
