Biography

Helena Agnieszka Kmieć was born on 9 February 1991 in Kraków, Poland, and grew up in the town of Libiąż in southern Poland, where her family belonged to the parish of Saint Barbara. Her mother died while she was still a child, and she was raised by her father together with her sister. From youth she took part in parish life, singing, playing the guitar, and joining youth groups. After secondary school she studied at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, completing a degree in chemical technology in the 2010s, and she later worked in her professional field while remaining active as a volunteer.

Kmieć’s adult religious life was that of a committed lay Catholic, not a professed member of a religious order. During her university years she joined the Salvatorian Missionary Volunteers, a Polish lay missionary movement associated with the Society of the Divine Savior. Through that movement she took part in charitable and missionary projects in several countries, including shorter assignments in Romania and Hungary and a longer period of service in Zambia, where she worked with children and young people. Those who knew her described her as cheerful, practical, and musically gifted, and as someone who understood missionary work as a form of Christian witness open to the laity. She did not marry and had no children.

In January 2017 she traveled to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to volunteer at a Catholic children’s home. She had only recently begun this assignment when, on the night of 24 January 2017, an intruder broke into the residence where the volunteers were staying. Kmieć was stabbed to death in the course of a robbery. She was twenty-five years old. A companion in the house survived by hiding. Bolivian authorities later arrested a suspect in connection with the killing. News of the death of a young Polish volunteer received wide coverage in Poland and in international Catholic media.

Her remains were repatriated to Poland. A funeral Mass was celebrated in Libiąż, attended by her family, clergy of the Diocese of Sosnowiec, Salvatorian priests and volunteers, and a large congregation of young people. She was buried in the parish cemetery in Libiąż. In the following years her grave and her memory became a point of reference for Polish missionary volunteers. Accounts of her life have emphasized her ordinary lay status, her technical education, and her willingness to serve far from home.

Devotion to Kmieć grew in Poland, and ecclesiastical authorities subsequently opened a cause for her beatification, treating her death in the context of Christian witness. She is commonly called a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized, has no assigned feast day in the general liturgical calendar, and is not the official patron of any place, profession, or cause. She held no hierarchical office in the Church.
