Biography

Short Description

Hélène Marie Philippine de Chappotin de Neuville, known in religion as Mary of the Passion, was born in 1839 in Nantes, in western France, into a family of the provincial nobility. Her father, Charles de Chappotin, held administrative office; her mother, Sophie Galbaud du Fort, raised the children in a strongly Catholic household. In adolescence Hélène underwent a conversion that oriented her toward consecrated life. After her mother’s death she entered the Society of Marie Reparatrice, a congregation devoted to reparation and missionary work, and received the name Mary of the Passion. She was soon assigned to the missions in southern India.

While serving in India in the 1860s and 1870s she became provincial superior of the Marie Reparatrice houses there. Disagreements with the congregation’s leadership in Europe over the direction of the Indian communities led to her dismissal, together with a group of sisters who supported her, in 1876. With episcopal encouragement she founded a new institute, the Missionaries of Mary, at Ootacamund in the Nilgiri Hills in 1877. The community was later aggregated to the Order of Friars Minor and took the name Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Mary of the Passion was elected superior general and remained at the head of the institute until her death.

The new congregation expanded with unusual speed. Houses were opened in Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and other mission territories. Sisters engaged in education, nursing, social work, and direct evangelization, often living in poverty according to a Franciscan ideal. Mary of the Passion combined a strong Marian and Eucharistic spirituality with an insistence on availability for the most difficult missions. She endured prolonged conflicts over governance, financial strain, and recurrent illness, yet the institute continued to grow and by the early twentieth century numbered some two thousand members in dozens of communities.

In her final years she divided her time between the generalate and visits to the missions. She died in 1904 at Sanremo on the Italian Riviera, where she had gone for reasons of health. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 15 November. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary remain an international missionary congregation.
