Biography
Heliodorus of Altinum, known in Italian as Eliodoro di Altino, was a Christian bishop of the later fourth century whose life is known chiefly through the letters of Saint Jerome rather than through any contemporary vita. He came from Dalmatia, a Roman province on the eastern Adriatic, and was drawn into the Latin clerical world of northern Italy, above all the church of Aquileia. That church, under bishops such as Valerian and then Chromatius, was a leading Nicene center in the decades after the Arian controversies. Later martyrological tradition links Heliodorus with Chromatius as a teacher or senior colleague and with Jerome as a friend and sometime companion. Precise dates of birth and of episcopal consecration are not preserved in surviving sources.
In the early 370s he traveled eastward with Jerome and reached the milieu of Antioch in Syria. When Jerome adopted the eremitical life in the desert of Chalcis, Heliodorus declined to remain and returned to the West. Jerome’s Letter 14, written from the desert, is addressed to him: it is an impassioned, highly literary appeal to abandon family and worldly obligation for monastic solitude, and it became one of the most widely read Latin exhortations to the ascetic life. The letter shows Heliodorus as an educated man with living relatives and with responsibilities that pulled him homeward. It is not a full biography. Later claims that he had been a professional soldier appear to rest more on Jerome’s military metaphors than on independent evidence.
Heliodorus was made bishop of Altinum, a Roman city of Venetia on the mainland near the coast that later became the Venetian lagoon. In that office he was remembered for holiness and learning and belonged to the network of anti-Arian, Jerome-friendly bishops in northern Italy. Jerome’s Letter 60, written about the mid-390s, consoles Heliodorus on the death of his nephew Nepotianus, a priest whom the bishop had trained. That letter shows that Heliodorus was alive and still regarded as a major correspondent of Jerome well into the 390s. No contemporary source records the day or year of his death, and figures sometimes given in later compilations are not securely founded.
The city of Altinum declined in late antiquity. During the seventh-century Lombard wars, inhabitants of the district took refuge on the islands of the lagoon, and the cult of Heliodorus was carried to Torcello. Relics attributed to him were enshrined in connection with the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta there, and he remained the principal holy bishop of the old Altinese see. The Roman Martyrology lists him on 3 July as bishop of Altinum, notable for sanctity and doctrine and a companion of Jerome. His veneration is of the ancient local episcopal type and was not the product of a later papal canonization process. Apart from Altino and the lagoon churches that preserved his memory, early sources do not record a wide range of specialized patronages.
