Biography

Short Description

Helladius of Kyiv, also known as Helladius of the Kiev Caves or, in Slavic forms, Elladiy or Gelladiy Pechersky, was an Eastern Orthodox monk and recluse of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. He belongs to the group of venerable fathers whose relics are preserved in the Far Caves, known as the Caves of Saint Theodosius, at the lavra in Kyiv. The lavra itself was founded in the mid-eleventh century by Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves and became the principal monastery of Kievan Rus' and later of the East Slavic Orthodox world. The Far Caves were developed as a second complex of monastic cells and burial places; the monks later commemorated there are generally assigned by tradition to a period later than the earliest Patericon fathers, often the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries, but no chronicle or colophon gives a year of birth or death for Helladius.

Surviving medieval sources do not preserve a connected Life of Helladius. The Kiev Caves Patericon, compiled in stages from the thirteenth century on the basis of earlier monastic memories, is silent about him by name in the well-known episodes that describe Anthony, Theodosius, Nikon, Agapetus, and other early figures. Later synaxaria and the printed liturgical books of the Kyiv Metropolitanate and the Russian Church identify him simply as a recluse. Reclusion, the withdrawal into a cave cell for unceasing prayer, manual labor in solitude, and severe fasting, was a characteristic ascetic path at the Pechersk monastery from its origins. In the absence of a narrative vita, it is not possible to describe particular miracles, writings, or disciples attached to Helladius, nor to name his secular origin, family, or the duration of his enclosure. Later piety has treated his relics and his place in the calendar as sufficient witness that he completed this hidden course of monastic life.

The relics of Helladius remain in the Far Caves, where pilgrims have venerated them together with those of other cave-dwelling monks. The Orthodox menologion assigns him a feast on 4 October. He is also commemorated on 28 August in the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Far Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, a collective feast that took stable form as the cult of the Pechersk saints was organized in the early modern period, especially from the seventeenth century, when the lavra’s press and the restored Kyiv metropolitanate promoted their memory. Helladius was not canonized by a pope of Rome, nor is he recorded as having held the office of patriarch or of bishop. His glorification is that of a locally and then more widely venerated monastic saint within Eastern Orthodoxy, without a separately documented individual act of canonization comparable to later papal procedures.

Because the written record is so limited, a careful historian must leave blank the year and place of his birth, the precise year of his death, and any claim of specific patronages of places, professions, or illnesses. There is no evidence that he married or had children; the state implied by all liturgical and hagiographical notices is that of a celibate monk. He remains, therefore, a figure known by name, by the manner of his asceticism, by the resting place of his relics, and by his days of commemoration—an example of the many Pechersk fathers whose individual biographies have not survived even though their veneration has.
