Biography

Short Description

Helladius of Toledo, also known as Eladio or Heladio, was a Visigothic churchman who served as bishop of Toledo in the early seventh century. He belonged to a noble Visigothic family and first followed a secular career at the royal court, where he held a high palace office. The principal near-contemporary account of his life is the brief notice by Saint Ildefonsus of Toledo in De viris illustribus. Ildefonsus, who was closely connected with the monastic community Helladius had led, presents him as a man who abandoned worldly rank in order to embrace the religious life. No reliable source records his year or place of birth.

Helladius entered the monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian at Agali, on the Tagus near Toledo, one of the chief monastic centres of Visigothic Hispania. There he was distinguished for humility and for works of charity. He was later chosen abbot of Agali. The house trained clerics who would occupy the see of Toledo; Ildefonsus himself belonged to that tradition. In the Visigothic kingdom after the conversion from Arianism enacted at the Third Council of Toledo in 589, such monasteries were important both spiritually and as nurseries of the episcopate.

In 615, after the death of Bishop Aurasius, Helladius was elected bishop of Toledo, according to Ildefonsus unwillingly. He governed the metropolitan church of Toledo for about eighteen years, until 633. As bishop he continued the austere and charitable practices of his monastic years. He is remembered for using the goods of the church to relieve the poor, for feeding the needy, and for personally serving them, including by washing their feet. Toledo was already rising as the ecclesiastical centre of the Catholic Visigothic realm during the reigns of kings such as Sisebut, Suinthila, and Sisenand.

Helladius died in 633 and was succeeded by Justus of Toledo. He was venerated as a saint in the Spanish church, and his feast is observed on 18 February. Surviving evidence for his life is limited almost entirely to Ildefonsus and to later liturgical and hagiographical tradition. No detailed record of councils he may have attended, of administrative acts beyond the general portrait of charity and humility, or of a burial place has been preserved in sources that can be independently verified.
