Biography

Henri Verjus was a Roman Catholic missionary and bishop of the late nineteenth century, associated with the first generation of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in New Guinea. He was born in 1860 in Oleggio, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, when the town still formed part of the Kingdom of Sardinia on the eve of Italian unification. Readily available historical sources give almost no information about his family, childhood, or education before he entered religious life. As a young man he joined the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a missionary institute founded in France in the 1850s, and was ordained a priest in the early 1880s.

In the mid-1880s Verjus was assigned to the missions in Oceania. The congregation had accepted the Apostolic Vicariate of New Guinea, a vast and little-evangelized territory then being divided among colonial powers. He took part in the pioneer phase of that work, which included coastal stations and the important mission centre on Yule Island. Conditions were those of classic nineteenth-century Pacific mission life: isolation, tropical climate, scarce resources, and first sustained contact with Papuan communities.

In 1889, while still a young priest, Verjus was appointed titular bishop of Limyra and coadjutor vicar apostolic of New Guinea, to assist Bishop Louis-André Navarre. He received episcopal consecration the same year. As coadjutor and then as a bishop in the vicariate he continued ordinary missionary labour rather than residing in a developed diocesan centre. His period of episcopal ministry lasted only a few years.

Already in poor health, Verjus died on 13 November 1892 at Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia, at the age of thirty-two. He was not beatified or canonized, and no official feast day or list of patronages is recorded for him in standard liturgical or hagiographical sources. He is remembered in the internal histories of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and in accounts of the foundation of the Catholic Church in what later became Papua New Guinea.
