Biography

Short Description

Henriette Aymer de la Chevalerie was born in 1767 at Saint-Georges-de-Noisné in the historic province of Poitou in western France, into a family of the provincial nobility. She grew up in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, in a Catholic household of landed status, and reached adulthood as the French Revolution dismantled both noble privilege and the public structures of the Church. During the Reign of Terror she was arrested and imprisoned at Poitiers. Congregational tradition treats that confinement as a decisive spiritual turning point: in prison she embraced a more radical life of prayer, penance, and fidelity to the Church at a time when public worship had been suppressed or driven underground. After the collapse of the Terror she remained in the Poitiers region among Catholics who were attempting to rebuild religious life without the old monastic houses, most of which had been dissolved.

In that setting she encountered the priest Pierre Coudrin, who had refused the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and had spent years in hiding while exercising a clandestine ministry. Together with a few companions they formed the project of a new religious family dedicated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and to perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, while also undertaking education, care of the poor, and, in time, foreign missions. On 24 December 1800, at Poitiers, Coudrin and a small group that included Henriette made a first religious profession. That Christmas Eve is regarded by the institute as its foundation date. Henriette became the first superior of the women who joined the new congregation, which later took the popular name Picpus from its principal house on the rue de Picpus in Paris.

She governed the sisters through the Consulate, the Empire, and the Bourbon Restoration, directing both their internal observance and their external works while the legal status of religious congregations in France remained unstable. Pope Pius VII granted formal approbation to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in 1817. Under her leadership the sisters combined perpetual eucharistic adoration with teaching and other apostolates. Contemporary and congregational accounts describe her government as practical and exacting as well as maternal; she insisted that the institute remain neither purely contemplative nor purely active. She was still superior of the sisters when she died in Paris in 1834, three years before Coudrin.

In the decades after her death the Picpus Congregation spread well beyond France, notably to Latin America and the Pacific. Its most widely known member, Damien de Veuster (Saint Damien of Molokai), belonged to the men’s branch. Henriette Aymer de la Chevalerie has not been beatified or canonized; she is remembered within her religious family as co-foundress and first mother superior of the sisters. Independent documentation of her inner life and of her years before the foundation is relatively limited and depends in large part on the archives and traditions of the congregation she helped to establish.
