Biography

Short Description

Henry (Latin Henricus; Finnish Henrik; Swedish Henrik), traditionally honoured as the first bishop of Finland and that country’s patron saint, is known almost entirely from later medieval legend rather than from twelfth-century documents. The principal narrative source is the Latin Vita et miracula Sancti Henrici, composed in the late thirteenth century for the church of Turku (Åbo). According to that vita he was an English-born cleric who travelled to Scandinavia in 1153 in the company of the papal legate Nicholas Breakspear, the future Pope Adrian IV. In Sweden he is associated in later tradition with King Eric IX (Eric the Saint) and with plans for a more fully organised Swedish church; some modern reconstructions suggest he may have been intended for high office at Uppsala, though the independent Swedish church province was not erected until 1164 and no contemporary record names him in that role.

The same legend states that Henry accompanied King Eric on a military and missionary expedition into southwestern Finland in the mid-1150s, an episode later remembered as the First Swedish Crusade. After the king’s return, Henry is said to have remained in Finland to preach, baptise, and organise a missionary church among the Finns. The vita and later Finnish folk tradition then describe his death as a martyrdom: on 20 January 1156 he was killed on the ice of Lake Köyliö (Köyliönjärvi) by a local peasant named Lalli. The usual story is that Lalli’s wife had given the bishop food in her husband’s absence; Lalli, enraged, pursued Henry and struck him down with an axe. A medieval Finnish-language ballad, the Piispa Henrikin surmavirsi (Death-lay of Bishop Henry), elaborates the killing and Lalli’s subsequent miraculous punishment, including the tradition that the bishop’s mitre froze to Lalli’s head.

According to the cult legend, Henry’s body was taken to Nousiainen (Nousis), which became the first centre of his veneration and the site of an early episcopal church. In 1300 his relics were translated to the newly built cathedral at Turku, thereafter the principal shrine of the medieval Diocese of Turku and the liturgical heart of the Finnish church. His feast was kept on 20 January, the traditional date of the martyrdom; in later Catholic usage the commemoration is on 19 January. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonisation of the later medieval or modern type; his cult grew by local episcopal and popular devotion (pre-congregation) and was firmly established in the diocesan liturgy, calendars, and pilgrimage practice of medieval Finland.

Historically, almost every element of this story is difficult to verify. No twelfth-century source names a Bishop Henry of Finland. The Swedish crusade of the 1150s, King Eric’s personal role, and Henry’s martyrdom are first attested generations later, and many historians treat the Vita as a foundation legend constructed to give the Turku diocese an apostolic and martyrial origin comparable to other Nordic sees. An English cleric named Henry may have been among Breakspear’s circle in Sweden in 1153, but there is no contemporary evidence that such a man ever reached Finland or died there. The peasant Lalli is likewise known only from later legend and folklore. The conventional death year 1156 and the English birth are therefore traditional attributions, not facts secured by twelfth-century documentation.

Despite the paucity of hard evidence, Henry’s cult shaped the medieval church in Finland and survived the Reformation in altered form. Lutheran churches in Finland and Sweden retained his commemoration as a historical and national figure, while the Roman Catholic Church continues to honour him as a saint and martyr. The modern Catholic Diocese of Helsinki regards him as a principal patron, and Turku Cathedral remains bound to his memory. His traditional death date, 20 January 1156, and the associated place-names around Köyliö and Nousiainen still mark Finnish popular culture, even as historians continue to distinguish the richly attested medieval cult from the thinly documented—if not wholly legendary—life of the man himself.
