Biography

Short Description

Henryk Hlebowicz was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest and martyr of the Second World War, later numbered among the blesseds of the Catholic Church. He was born on 1 July 1904 in Grodno, a city then in the Grodno Governorate of the Russian Empire and today Hrodna in Belarus, into a Polish family. He received his schooling in that borderland region and prepared for the priesthood in Vilnius, studying at the seminary and at Stefan Batory University. He was ordained a priest in 1928 for the Archdiocese of Vilnius. He subsequently obtained a doctorate in theology and belonged to the secular clergy rather than to a religious order. In the interwar Second Polish Republic he was part of the Polish Catholic clergy of the northeastern kresy, a mixed region of Poles, Lithuanians, Belarusians, and Jews, where the Latin-rite church was rebuilding parish and intellectual life after the partitions and the First World War.

During the 1930s Hlebowicz’s ministry was centered on Vilnius. He became known especially as a pastor to academic youth, serving as an academic chaplain and working among university students. That apostolate involved preaching, sacramental ministry, and the religious formation of the educated laity at a time when Catholic student associations and chaplaincies were important in Polish university towns. He remained a priest of the Archdiocese of Vilnius under Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski’s jurisdiction. Contemporary and later Polish church sources present him as a preacher and an intellectually formed diocesan priest rather than as a public political figure. No marriage or children are recorded; as a Latin-rite Catholic priest he lived under the discipline of clerical celibacy.

The German and Soviet invasions of Poland in 1939 placed Vilnius and the surrounding lands under successive occupations: Soviet, then Lithuanian, then Soviet again in 1940, and German after the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Public church life had been harshly restricted under Soviet rule. After the German occupation of Belarus, Hlebowicz went east from the Vilnius milieu into the Minsk–Borisov area to bring the sacraments and pastoral care to Catholics who had been left without priests. That work among Poles and local Catholics in German-occupied Belarus led to his arrest by the German security apparatus. On 9 November 1941 he was executed by firing squad in Borisov (Barysaw). He was thirty-seven years old. A precise burial site is not securely established in the sources commonly cited for his life; wartime executions in that region often ended in unmarked or mass graves.

Hlebowicz is one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, Polish clergy and lay faithful killed under Nazi German occupation and beatified together. Pope John Paul II beatified the group in Warsaw on 13 June 1999. They are commemorated in the Catholic liturgical calendar on 12 June. Hlebowicz has not been canonized. Knowledge of his life rests mainly on Polish martyrological, diocesan, and biographical notices connected with the former Archdiocese of Vilnius and with the wartime church in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic. He is remembered as a diocesan priest who undertook dangerous pastoral work in occupied Belarus and who was killed in the course of that ministry.
