Biography

Short Description

Herculanus of Brescia, known in Italian as Sant'Ercolano di Brescia, is a saint of the Catholic Church commemorated as a bishop of Brescia, the ancient Brixia of Roman Cisalpine Gaul, in what is now Lombardy in northern Italy. Liturgical tradition places him in the sixth century. That century was a time of severe disruption for the cities of the Po valley: the Gothic War between the Ostrogoths and the East Roman Empire, famine and plague, and, from 568, the Lombard conquest, which made Brescia the seat of a powerful Lombard duchy. The Roman Martyrology enters his name on 12 August simply as bishop of Brescia. That notice is the chief ancient witness to his cult. No contemporary letter, inscription, or narrative life that can be securely attributed to him, or written about him in his own age, has come down to us.

The medieval catalogues of the bishops of Brescia include Herculanus among the early holders of the see, yet those catalogues were drawn up many centuries later and combine names that can be confirmed from independent documents with names known only from local tradition. Consequently his position in the succession, the length of his episcopate, and any dates of birth, consecration, or death cannot be verified from a reliable historical source. Popular saint calendars sometimes assign him a death about the middle of the sixth century; such a year is conventional rather than documented. Nothing certain is recorded of his origins, family, formation, or the manner of his election and consecration. Whether he governed the church of Brescia under Ostrogothic, imperial, or already Lombard political authority remains unknown.

He is not to be confused with other Italian saints called Herculanus, especially Saint Herculanus of Perugia, a bishop killed in the mid-sixth century during the war with the Ostrogothic king Totila, whose martyrdom and cult at Perugia are described in a passio and in the Dialogues of Gregory the Great. Popular listings sometimes conflate the Brescian bishop with the Perugian martyr. There is no evidence that Herculanus of Brescia was a martyr, that he occupied the see of Rome or any patriarchal throne, or that he was a member of a monastic or other religious order. The Martyrology honours him as a bishop. His personal state of life—whether he had ever been married, whether he had children—is not recorded in surviving sources.

Veneration of Herculanus of Brescia appears to have been local rather than universal in practice, even after his name was received into the martyrology. The city of Brescia has long invoked as its principal patrons the early martyrs Faustinus and Jovita; Herculanus is not listed among the official patron saints of the diocese or commune in the authorities ordinarily consulted. No verified account of his burial place, of a translation of relics, or of a shrine dedicated to him in the early Middle Ages has been identified in the sources used here. Like numerous bishops of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, he was regarded as a saint through local cult and eventual martyrological entry, without a papal canonization of the later, formal kind. The historically defensible picture is therefore modest: a bishop of sixth-century Brescia, remembered on 12 August, whose biography beyond that episcopal title and liturgical commemoration cannot be reconstructed from evidence that meets a critical standard.
