Biography

Short Description

Herculanus of Perugia, known in Italian as Sant'Ercolano, was a sixth-century bishop of Perugia in Umbria who is venerated as a martyr. Almost nothing can be verified about his early life, family, place of birth, or the year of his birth. He enters the historical record only as bishop of the city during the Gothic War (535–554), when the Ostrogothic king Totila contested control of the Italian peninsula with the Byzantine Empire. The principal ancient testimony about him is the account in the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great, written around 593, some four decades after the events Gregory describes.

According to Gregory, Totila besieged Perugia and, after taking the city—an event historians date to 549—ordered that Bishop Herculanus be put to death. Gregory relates that the king commanded a soldier first to cut a strip of skin from the crown of the bishop's head down the length of his body and then to behead him. The corpse was thrown outside the walls together with the body of an infant. The narrative is hagiographical and includes miraculous elements, but it is consistent with the known capture of Perugia by Totila in that year and with the violence of the later Gothic War. Independent contemporary documentation of Herculanus's episcopate before the siege does not survive.

Gregory further reports that about forty days after the execution a man sought to give the bishop honorable burial. Those who recovered the remains found that the severed head had been miraculously rejoined to the body, so that only a thin red line marked the place of the wound. Later tradition holds that he was first buried near the place of martyrdom outside the walls. His relics were subsequently translated and are now preserved in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia. A church dedicated to Sant'Ercolano, erected in the later Middle Ages on the slope below the city walls, marks the traditional site of his death.

Herculanus became the principal patron saint of Perugia and is often paired in local devotion with Saint Constantius, an earlier bishop of the city. His feast is kept on 7 November, as recorded in the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates him as bishop and martyr at Perugia. Beyond Gregory's Dialogues and the subsequent liturgical and civic cult, details of his life remain unknown.
