Biography

Short Description

Herculanus (Italian: Ercolano) was a sixth-century bishop of Perugia in Umbria and is venerated as a martyr and as the principal patron saint of that city. Almost nothing can be established about his early life, family, or the date and place of his birth; the surviving notices begin only with his episcopate and death. He lived during the Gothic War (535–554), when the Eastern Roman Empire under Justinian I fought the Ostrogothic Kingdom for control of Italy. Perugia, an important inland stronghold, was drawn into the fighting as towns across the peninsula changed hands.

The principal ancient account of his death is given by Pope Gregory I in the Dialogues (Book III, chapter 13), written in the 590s. Gregory relates that Totila, king of the Ostrogoths, captured Perugia and ordered Bishop Herculanus put to death. In that narrative a soldier first flayed a strip of skin from the crown of the bishop’s head to his feet and then beheaded him; the body was thrown outside the walls. Forty days later, when the Christians could recover the dead, they found the head joined again to the trunk, marked only by a thin red line. Historians generally date the fall of Perugia, and thus Herculanus’s martyrdom, to 549, correlating Gregory’s story with the chronology of Totila’s campaigns known from Procopius and other sources. Gregory’s aim was edifying, and the miraculous reattachment of the head belongs to hagiographical tradition; that a bishop of Perugia was killed in the Ostrogothic capture of the city is consistent with the known violence of the war.

Devotion to Herculanus took root in Perugia at an early date. His feast is kept on 7 November, the date under which he appears in the Roman Martyrology as bishop and martyr of Perugia. He is the city’s patron saint. A church dedicated to him (Sant’Ercolano) was later built at Perugia near the site associated with his death, just outside the ancient walls; relics connected with him have been kept in the city, notably in connection with the cathedral of San Lorenzo. Medieval and later civic ritual in Perugia commemorated him as a protector of the commune. No contemporary evidence records a wife or children, nor membership in a later-style religious order; he is known solely as a diocesan bishop.

Beyond Gregory’s chapter and the martyrological entry, the historical record is thin. Later legends sometimes embroidered his life, but these cannot be verified and should not be treated as fact. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a bishop named Herculanus of Perugia was killed in the mid-sixth century during Totila’s operations in Umbria, that Pope Gregory recorded a dramatic version of his passion within about half a century, and that Perugia has honored him as martyr and patron ever since.
