Biography

Short Description

Hereswith (also rendered Hereswitha, Hereswyde, Haeresvid, or Hereswithe) was a seventh-century Northumbrian noblewoman of the Deiran royal kindred who later became a nun in Frankish Gaul. She is known almost entirely from brief notices in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People and from East Anglian royal genealogies. She was a daughter of Hereric, a nephew of King Edwin of Northumbria, and of Hereric's wife Breguswith. Bede records that Hereric lived for a time in exile and was poisoned while under the protection of Cerdic, a British ruler of Elmet. Hereswith's sister was Saint Hilda, later abbess of Hartlepool and of Whitby. No contemporary source gives the year or place of Hereswith's birth; she belonged to the generation that came of age in the decades after Edwin's conversion and death, and she flourished in the first half of the seventh century.

Through marriage Hereswith was joined to the Wuffingas, the royal dynasty of the East Angles. Bede identifies her as the mother of Ealdwulf (Aldwulf), who ruled East Anglia from about 664 until 713. Bede does not name her husband. Later genealogical tradition and modern historical reconstruction identify him as Æthelric, a son of Eni and a brother of the East Anglian kings Anna, Æthelhere, and Æthelwold. The match created a dynastic link between Deira and East Anglia at a time when both kingdoms were being drawn into the Christian missions. Hereswith thus stood at the intersection of two of the principal royal houses of seventh-century England, and her son's long reign helped stabilize East Anglia after the mid-century wars with Mercia.

In mature life Hereswith withdrew from secular affairs and took the veil at the monastery of Chelles (called Cale by Bede) in Neustria. Chelles was a leading Frankish royal double monastery, associated with Queen Balthild and governed in this period by Abbess Bertila. Bede records that Hereswith was already a nun there when her sister Hilda wished to follow her overseas; Bishop Aidan of Lindisfarne instead summoned Hilda back to Northumbria to take charge of a monastery. Hereswith therefore belongs to a well-attested pattern of high-born Anglo-Saxon women who, in the mid-seventh century, sought the more fully organized monastic life of northern Francia rather than remaining in the still-developing English houses.

No reliable source gives the date or circumstances of Hereswith's death, though she is presumed to have ended her life at Chelles. She was remembered as a saint in some later medieval calendars, but she never acquired a widely observed feast day, a developed legend, or established patronages. Her historical importance rests on Bede's testimony, on her place in the Northumbrian and East Anglian genealogies, and on the light she throws on the religious choices open to royal women in conversion-era England. Beyond these facts the record is silent, and later embellishments should be treated with caution.
