Biography

Short Description

Heriburg of Nottuln, known in Latin as Heriburgis and in German as Heriburg von Nottuln, was a noblewoman of Frisian family who lived in the later eighth and early ninth centuries. She was a daughter of Thiadgrim and of Liafburg, a Christian of Frisian aristocracy, and a sister of Saint Liudger, missionary to the Frisians and Saxons and first bishop of Münster, and of Saint Hildegrim, who became bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne. The family's world was that of the early Carolingian conversion of the northern Low Countries and Westphalia. Liudger himself was born about 742 in the region of Utrecht; Heriburg's own place and year of birth are not recorded in surviving sources. Through her mother the family stood in the Christian tradition associated with the mission of Willibrord. Evidence for Heriburg personally is sparse and is largely bound up with the memory of her more famous brother.

According to Westphalian tradition, Liudger founded a community of women at Nottuln, in the Münsterland west of Münster, around the year 800, and entrusted it to his sister Heriburg as first abbess. Nottuln developed as a Stift, a collegiate house for women of noble birth, of a type characteristic of the Carolingian church in Saxony and Westphalia. Contemporary documentation of the foundation is thin. The principal ninth-century source for the family, the Vita sancti Liudgeri written by Altfrid, bishop of Münster and a kinsman of Liudger, focuses on Liudger's studies, missions, and miracles and does not supply a full independent biography of Heriburg. Later medieval and early modern accounts of Nottuln nevertheless consistently name her as the first superior of the house. Whether the earliest community followed a strictly Benedictine monastic rule or a canonical rule for sanctimoniales cannot be established with precision from the sources that remain; later hagiography often describes her as a Benedictine abbess.

Heriburg's death is commemorated on 16 October. Secondary literature gives the year as 838 or 844; a strictly contemporary notice of the year has not been preserved, and both dates circulate in martyrologies and local histories. She is held to have died at Nottuln and to have been buried at her foundation. Her cult remained local, centered on the Stift and on the Diocese of Münster, and was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the kind later required by the Roman Church. She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic tradition, often in close association with Liudger, whose own feast falls on 26 March. The women's house at Nottuln endured for many centuries thereafter as a foundation of noble canonesses, which helped keep her name in regional memory.

Because so little was written about her in her own age, the historian must distinguish what is reasonably secure from what is later pious tradition. It is secure that Liudger had a sister named Heriburg and that a women's religious house existed at Nottuln in the Carolingian period and looked back to her as its first abbess. It is not possible, on present evidence, to reconstruct her childhood, the inner discipline of her community, or a detailed chronology of her abbacy. Her significance in the religious history of Westphalia lies in her place within one of the leading missionary families of the Saxon and Frisian missions and in the long local remembrance of Nottuln as a house of prayer founded in that first Christian generation.
