Biography

Short Description

Hérifrid (also known as Herifrid, Herifroy, or in Latin Herifridus) was a Frankish monk and bishop of the late ninth and early tenth centuries. He is attested as bishop of Auxerre, a see in Burgundy in West Francia. Before his elevation he belonged to the monastic community of the Abbey of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre, a leading Benedictine house and the centre of the cult of Saint Germanus of Auxerre. In 887 he became bishop of Auxerre, taking up the see in a period of political fragmentation after the deposition and death of Charles the Fat and amid continuing insecurity in the Frankish kingdoms.

His episcopate fell in an age of Viking (Northmen) raids along the rivers of Francia. Auxerre and its churches were affected by the general disorder of the later ninth century, when monasteries and episcopal property were repeatedly threatened. Local historiography, above all the Gesta pontificum Autissiodorensium (Deeds of the Bishops of Auxerre), places Hérifrid in the succession of the see and presents him as a pastor who maintained the liturgical and monastic life of his church. Surviving notices do not yield a detailed administrative record, synodal activity, or a clear picture of his relations with Carolingian and Robertian lay powers; he is remembered in diocesan tradition as a holy bishop rather than as a major political figure.

Hérifrid died on 23 October 909. He was venerated as a saint in the diocese of Auxerre, and his feast was observed on the anniversary of his death. The cult remained essentially local to Auxerre and the abbey of Saint-Germain; there is no evidence of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. Almost nothing reliable is recorded of his parentage, birthplace, or early life beyond his monastic profession. No writings by him are known to survive, and he is not associated with a widely circulated miracle collection.

Later martyrologies and catalogues of the bishops of Auxerre include him among the holy prelates of the see. Modern reconstruction of his career depends on the Gesta and on the episcopal lists, which confirm his tenure between the late ninth-century bishops and his successor. His historical significance is that of a representative Frankish monk-bishop at the turn of the tenth century, combining a Benedictine background with diocesan leadership in an era of invasion and dynastic change. Precise dates of birth and many personal details remain unknown.
