Biography

Short Description

Herman of Alaska was a Russian Orthodox monk and missionary who spent the latter part of his life in Russian America and is venerated as a saint of the Orthodox Church. Traditional accounts place his birth in the mid-eighteenth century at Serpukhov in the Moscow region of the Russian Empire; the precise year is not securely documented, and his name in the world is not known with certainty. As a young man he entered monastic life, first at the Trinity-Sergius Hermitage near Saint Petersburg and later at Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga, where he was tonsured and trained in the ascetic discipline of that community. Valaam’s missionary outlook and its connections with the imperial church and the Russian-American Company shaped the next stage of his life.

In 1793 a party of monks from Valaam and Konevets was designated for the first organized Orthodox mission to Alaska. Herman was among them. After traveling across Siberia and the North Pacific they reached Kodiak Island in 1794. The missionaries encountered a colonial order in which the Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) population was often harshly treated by company agents. Several members of the original party died, returned to Russia, were lost at sea, or, in the case of the monk Juvenaly, were killed. Herman remained. He eventually left the colonial settlement and settled as a hermit on Spruce Island (Yelovoi), a small forested island near Kodiak, which he called New Valaam. There he lived in a dugout and later a simple wooden cell, kept a garden, built a chapel, and gathered orphans and local children for instruction.

On Spruce Island he became known for extreme simplicity of life, for interceding on behalf of native people against exploitation, and for a reputation for wonderworking that circulated among both Alaskans and Russian visitors. He was not ordained to the priesthood and declined ecclesiastical promotion, remaining a simple monk. Naval officers and colonial officials who met him in the 1820s and 1830s described an aged ascetic of small stature, dressed in a deerskin garment, devoted to prayer, fasting, and the care of the poor. Stories preserved in later hagiography attribute to him the stilling of a flood by placing an icon on the shore, the turning back of a forest fire, healings, and a close companionship with wild animals. He is also said to have foretold the time of his death. He never returned to Russia.

Herman died on Spruce Island in 1837 (some nineteenth-century notices give 1836) and was buried there by those who had lived with him. Devotion to him persisted in Alaska through oral tradition and through memoirs such as those associated with Simeon Yanovsky, a colonial official who had known him. In the twentieth century his life was reconstructed from these materials and from archival documents of the Russian-American Company and the Church. He was glorified as a saint in 1970 by the Orthodox Church in America and by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia; the Moscow Patriarchate likewise recognizes his sanctity. His principal feast days are 9 August, commemorating the glorification, and 13 December, commemorating his repose. Relics have been enshrined at Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Kodiak, while Spruce Island remains a place of pilgrimage. He is widely regarded as the first canonized Orthodox saint of North America and as a heavenly patron of Alaska and of the continent.
