Biography

Hermengaudus, known in Catalan as Sant Ermengol and in Castilian as San Ermengol or San Armengol, was bishop of Urgell in the eastern Pyrenees in the first third of the eleventh century. He belonged to the nobility of the County of Urgell, a frontier principality of the old Hispanic March in what is now Catalonia, and was a kinsman of his predecessor Bishop Salla. Before his elevation he served as archdeacon of the diocese. Surviving charters and narrative sources do not record the year or the exact place of his birth. In 1010 he succeeded Salla as bishop of a mountainous see whose valleys were then being reorganized as Christian settlement advanced southward.

As bishop he devoted himself to the restoration of churches, the endowment and organization of the cathedral chapter of Santa Maria at La Seu d'Urgell, and the defence of diocesan property. He obtained confirmations of the rights and possessions of his church from the counts of the region and from the papacy. He is closely associated with the rebuilding of the cathedral of Urgell: the great Romanesque church that still stands was consecrated in 1040, after his death, but the project was begun during his episcopate. In a diocese split by gorges and torrents he also promoted roads and bridges, works of pastoral as well as economic importance.

Later tradition, preserved in a vita written after his death, portrays him as a bishop who shared the physical labours of his people. That tradition holds that he died of injuries received when he fell while inspecting the construction of a bridge over the river Segre at El Pont de Bar, in the present comarca of Alt Urgell. The year of his death is given as 1035. He was buried in his cathedral at La Seu d'Urgell, where his tomb became the centre of a local cult. His feast has been kept on 3 November.

The figure recoverable from documents is that of an active eleventh-century Catalan bishop: a noble cleric, a builder, a guardian of ecclesiastical temporalities, and a participant in the religious and political life of the Pyrenean counties. Precise biographical details beyond his episcopal acts from 1010 to 1035 and the traditional circumstances of his death remain scarce. He was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his sanctity was recognized by the diocese he had governed.

The cult of Hermengaudus has continued in the diocese of Urgell. He is invoked as patron of the see and of its cathedral city, La Seu d'Urgell. Hagiographical accounts stress his charity, his zeal for the fabric of churches, and his death in the course of a work of public utility. Modern historians treat miraculous episodes in the vita with caution while accepting the outline of his career as bishop as well documented.
