Biography

Short Description

Hermit Bessarion, known in monastic literature as Abba Bessarion and in the Eastern churches as Saint Bessarion the Wonderworker of Egypt, was a Christian ascetic of the Egyptian desert in the fourth and fifth centuries. He belongs to the generation of Desert Fathers whose brief sayings and anecdotes were gathered in the Greek collections called the Apophthegmata Patrum. Surviving sources do not record his parentage, the exact place of his birth, or the date of his birth. Tradition holds that he was an Egyptian, that he received Christian baptism, and that he then withdrew from ordinary society to live as a monk and wandering hermit in the deserts of Egypt, particularly in the region of Scetis (Wadi El Natrun).

The portrait given in the desert sayings is one of extreme austerity even by the standards of early Egyptian monasticism. Bessarion is said to have gone for many years without lying down, sleeping only while sitting or standing. He lived as a perpetual pilgrim and stranger, possessing almost nothing and remaining in no single cell for long. Constant weeping for sin is a recurring motif in the stories about him. Several miracle narratives became attached to his memory in the monastic tradition: he is reported to have crossed a river dry-shod by making the sign of the cross, to have prayed that the sun stand still so he could reach his destination before the Lord's Day, and to have obtained water in waterless places through prayer. Such accounts are characteristic of the hagiographical style of desert literature and cannot be independently verified from contemporary historical documents.

Bessarion appears in the collections as an elder who had at least one disciple, named Doulas, who transmitted some of his words. He is sometimes associated with visits to other famous Egyptian monks of the same era. One well-known anecdote shows him taking the canonical penance of a fallen brother upon himself so that the community might receive the sinner back. His teaching, as preserved, stresses humility, the remembrance of death, and solidarity with the weak. He is not known to have founded a monastery or to have held any ecclesiastical office such as bishop or abbot of a large community.

The year and precise place of his death are not established by contemporary historical documents. Later liturgical synaxaria of the Orthodox Church commemorate him on 6 June as the Venerable Bessarion the Wonderworker of Egypt and sometimes assign a death date in the later fifth century, but that date is traditional rather than critically verified. No reliable information survives concerning his burial. Veneration of Bessarion as a saint developed within the monastic and liturgical tradition of the Eastern churches; he was not the subject of a formal canonization process of the kind later used in the Latin Church. He remains an obscure figure outside specialist literature on early Egyptian monasticism, and most details of his life rest on the pious anecdotes of the Desert Fathers rather than on archival or archaeological evidence.
