Biography

Short Description

Saint Onuphrius, known in Greek as Onouphrios and often called Onuphrius the Great, was a Christian hermit of the Egyptian desert in the fourth century and is counted among the Desert Fathers. Almost everything reported about him comes from a hagiographical narrative attributed to Paphnutius, a monk connected with Scetis or the Thebaid, who described a long journey into the inner wilderness in search of servants of God living in complete solitude. In that account he met an aged anchorite whose body was covered with hair and who wore only a girdle of leaves. The text belongs to the literature of desert spirituality rather than to documentary biography: no independent contemporary record supplies a year of birth or a precisely attested year of death. Later medieval Western versions that make Onuphrius the son of a Persian king or of an Egyptian ruler are secondary elaborations and are not found in the earliest Egyptian recension of the story.

According to Paphnutius, Onuphrius had first been a monk in a cenobitic monastery of about one hundred brethren in the Thebaid. Inspired by the biblical examples of the prophet Elijah and of John the Baptist, and after a divine indication, he left the community to live as an anchorite. An angel is said to have led him to a remote place provided with a date palm and a spring. He remained there for sixty years in some recensions and seventy in others, enduring at the outset demonic assaults, hunger, and exposure before receiving miraculous sustenance and, on Sundays, the Eucharist from an angel. When Paphnutius found him, Onuphrius declared that the day of his death had arrived. After conversation, prayer, and a shared meal he died the following day. Paphnutius buried him; some later versions add that two lions helped to dig the grave. The palm tree and the hermitage then withered or vanished, a narrative sign that the way of life just witnessed was a unique vocation and not a general rule.

Veneration of Onuphrius spread widely in the Christian East. He is commemorated on 12 June in the Byzantine synaxaria and in the Roman Martyrology; Coptic tradition also honors him, with a feast in the month of Paoni. The figure of the hairy, leaf-girded hermit became a powerful emblem of extreme eremitism in monastic circles. From the period of the Crusades and the later Middle Ages his cult was received in the Latin West. Churches and monasteries were dedicated to him in Egypt, Palestine, Greece, the Slavic lands, and Italy; a well-known Western example is the church of Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo on the Janiculum in Rome. Relics have been claimed in various places, but the original burial described in the vita was in the uninhabited desert, and no historically verified fourth-century tomb is known.

In art Onuphrius is shown as an emaciated, long-bearded old man, often covered by his own hair except for a loincloth of leaves, and frequently accompanied by a palm tree, a spring, an angel bringing communion, or lions. Because of the leafy garment he came to be regarded as a patron of weavers; he is also invoked as a patron of hermits. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult is ancient and belongs to the pre-congregation period of the Church. Historians value the Paphnutius narrative as evidence for the ideals of Egyptian anchoritism in late antiquity, while remaining cautious about recovering a detailed individual biography from it.
