Biography

Short Description

Hermit Serapion, commonly identified with the monk whom Palladius of Galatia calls Serapion the Sindonite, belongs to the fourth-century Egyptian desert tradition. Surviving evidence does not record his year of birth, his native town, or a precise year of death. He is described as an Egyptian by origin. The main narrative source is a chapter of Palladius’s Lausiac History, composed in the early fifth century, supplemented by a handful of sayings in the alphabetical Apophthegmata Patrum. Later Greek menologia and the Roman Martyrology commemorate an Egyptian anchorite named Serapion, but these liturgical notices are brief and may in some calendars blend more than one monk of that name. Serapion of Thmuis, the learned bishop and correspondent of Athanasius, is a distinct figure, even though he too had been a monk and a disciple of Antony the Great.

Palladius explains the surname Sindonite by Serapion’s clothing: he wore only a sindon, a linen wrapping, and kept no other garment or property. His asceticism took the form of radical poverty and of a wandering life rather than of long residence in a single cell. The Lausiac History relates that he sold himself as a slave to a company of stage-players for twenty pieces of money, lived among them in service, and remained until he had converted them and seen them baptized; they then set him free, and he disposed of the money for the poor. Other anecdotes of self-sale, of giving away whatever came into his hands, and of refusing to own even a second garment, present the same ideal of dispossession. In the sayings tradition a monk named Serapion is credited with selling his copy of the Gospels to feed the hungry, observing that he had sold the very book which instructed him to sell all and give to the poor. Whether every anecdote attaches to one historical person cannot be demonstrated, but they were transmitted under his name as examples of evangelical literalism.

Palladius also sends Serapion on journeys beyond Egypt. He is said to have visited Athens, where he disputed with philosophers who mocked his appearance, and Rome, where he stayed with a woman living in seclusion and pressed her to abandon remaining attachments to wealth. These episodes portray a monk whose eremitical calling did not exclude travel or public confrontation, a pattern found among some of the early Egyptian wanderers. After such journeys the tradition returns him to Egypt, where he ended his life in the desert. No ancient source names the site of his death or his grave.

Veneration of Serapion as a saint is early and liturgical rather than the product of a later papal process of canonization. The Roman Martyrology records Saint Serapion, an anchorite in Egypt, on 21 March. Byzantine and Slavic calendars often remember Serapion the Sindonite in May, commonly on 14 May. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. There is no historical indication that he married or had children; the sources present him as a celibate monk from the time he enters the narrative. No medieval or modern list of specialized patronages—of places, trades, or illnesses—can be securely documented for him. What remains is the portrait of an Egyptian hermit whose memory was preserved because of an unusually stark practice of poverty and of charity that extended even to the surrender of personal freedom.
