Biography

Short Description

Saint Zosimas of Palestine, often called Zosimus the Monk or Hermit Zosimus, is venerated in the Eastern Christian tradition as the monastic elder who encountered Saint Mary of Egypt in the desert beyond the Jordan. Almost everything that can be said about him derives from the Greek Life of Mary of Egypt, a text that later manuscripts attribute to Patriarch Sophronius of Jerusalem (died 638). The work is a carefully composed hagiographical narrative rather than a contemporary chronicle, and it presents Zosimas as the trustworthy priest-monk through whom Mary’s story and her last Communion enter the Church’s memory. Independent documentary evidence for his life does not survive.

According to that Life, Zosimas had been placed in a monastery in Palestine in childhood and had spent decades in fasting, vigil, and the study of the Scriptures. By about his fifty-third year he had acquired a reputation for ascetic excellence, yet he was troubled by the thought that he had no further teacher among the monks. A divine intimation directed him to a monastery lying near the Jordan River, whose brethren each year, after the Sunday of Forgiveness at the beginning of Lent, crossed the Jordan and lived in complete solitude in the desert until Palm Sunday. Zosimas adopted this custom. In the wilderness he came upon a figure so wasted and darkened by the sun that he at first took it for a demonic apparition; it was Mary, who had fled Alexandria after a life of prostitution, crossed the Jordan, and spent forty-seven years in repentance with almost no human contact.

Mary asked Zosimas to tell no one of her while she lived, to return the following year with the reserved Sacrament, and not to cross the Jordan himself. He did as she asked, bringing her Holy Communion on the bank of the river. The year after that he found her dead body in the desert, with an inscription in the earth giving her name and stating that she had died on the very night of her Communion, which the narrative places on 1 April. A lion, according to the story, helped him scratch out a grave. Zosimas then returned to his monastery and, after Mary’s death, related what he had seen. The Life portrays him as living on for many years as an elder of the community.

Later Orthodox synaxaria commemorate Zosimas on 4 April, adjacent to the feast of Mary of Egypt on 1 April; he is also remembered in connection with the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, which is dedicated to Mary. Icons typically show him as an old monk giving Communion to the emaciated saint or burying her with the lion. Some popular calendars assign his death to the mid-sixth century and speak of a great age, but these dates are traditional and cannot be confirmed from contemporary records. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. As a monk from childhood he is understood to have been unmarried and without children. His birthplace, the exact years of his birth and death, and the site of his own burial are not recorded in sources that can be historically verified.
