Biography

Short Description

Herodion of Patras (also rendered Herodian or Rodion; Greek Ἡρωδίων, Ἡρωδιανός, or Ῥοδίων) is a figure of early Christian tradition identified with the Herodion whom the Apostle Paul greets in the Epistle to the Romans as a kinsman: Romans 16:11. That single New Testament notice is the only contemporary evidence for him. No birth year, birthplace, or family history can be established from reliable historical sources. Later church tradition, especially in the Christian East, numbered him among the Seventy Disciples of Luke 10 (a group the Gospel itself leaves unnamed) and treated him as one of the apostolic men listed in the closing chapter of Romans, alongside figures such as Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Erastus, Olympas, Sosipater, Quartus, and Tertius.

Hagiographical lists of the Seventy, including those associated with Dorotheus of Tyre and related recensions, assign Herodion an episcopal see at Patras in Achaea, or alternatively at Neopatras (Neai Patrai) in Thessaly. The two identifications are not easily reconciled: Patras is the well-known city of the Roman province of Achaea, while Neai Patrai is a medieval toponym for the site of modern Ypati, so the Neopatras ascription is likely a later Byzantine overlay. Tradition holds that he labored among Christian communities in the Greek world in the first century, but these episcopal notices cannot be confirmed independently and vary from list to list. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor patriarch or catholicos of any autocephalous see.

The same Eastern martyr-acts describe a violent death. Herodion is said to have been persecuted by Jews and pagans, beaten, stoned, and stabbed, and finally beheaded in the region of his supposed see. No year of death, no securely attested place of execution, and no burial site survive in sources that meet historical standards; the tortures belong to the conventional repertoire of later passion narratives rather than to documented first-century events. Whether he was married or had children is unknown; the Pauline greeting as kinsman does not settle the question, and early episcopal celibacy cannot be assumed.

Veneration of Herodion is ancient and liturgical rather than the product of a named medieval canonization. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 4 January (the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles), on 8 April (with Agabus, Rufus, Asyncritus, Phlegon, and Hermes), and on 10 November (with Erastus, Olympas, Sosipater, Quartus, and Tertius). He appears in other Eastern calendars on related days; Western commemoration is thinner and largely dependent on the same Roman 16 and Seventy-Apostle traditions. No distinctive, well-documented patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to him in standard martyrologies. In short, Herodion remains an obscure apostolic-age name around which later hagiography gathered an episcopal title and a martyrdom; the historian can affirm the Pauline greeting and the subsequent cult, but little else.
