Biography

Short Description

Herulph (also rendered Hariolf, Hariolfus, or Herulf) was an eighth-century Frankish nobleman and Benedictine monk remembered as the founder and first abbot of Ellwangen Abbey. He belonged to a family of Burgundian aristocracy. Contemporary documentation of his life is extremely sparse, and no reliable record of his date or place of birth has survived. He is known to have become a monk at the Abbey of Saint Gall, one of the leading Benedictine monasteries of the Carolingian world, situated in present-day Switzerland.

In 764, Herulph, acting together with his brother Erlolf (who held the see of Langres), established a new Benedictine monastery at Ellwangen on the river Jagst, in the lands of the Alemanni that had come under Frankish control. The foundation formed part of the broader movement of monastic expansion and evangelization in the eastern territories of the Frankish realm during the eighth century. Herulph assumed the office of first abbot and governed the community according to the Rule of Saint Benedict.

Ellwangen Abbey subsequently developed into a significant religious house and, in later centuries, an imperial abbey possessing extensive lands and rights. Herulph died at Ellwangen in 785; later tradition assigns the date of his death to 13 August. He was buried in the monastery he had founded. A local cult arose around his memory, and he has been venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, with his feast observed on 13 August. Because of the limited nature of the early sources, later hagiographical accounts add little that can be independently verified concerning his personal virtues, administrative acts, or any miracles.

The historical Herulph thus stands as a typical example of the aristocratic monastic founders of the early Carolingian period, whose principal attested achievement was the establishment of a lasting Benedictine community in a frontier region of the Frankish kingdom. Subsequent centuries of monastic historiography at Ellwangen preserved his name as the abbey’s originator, even as many biographical particulars remained unknown.
