Biography

Short Description

Hesychius of Jerusalem was a Christian priest, preacher, and biblical exegete active in Jerusalem in the first half of the fifth century. Almost nothing can be established with certainty about his family, place of birth, or the exact years of his birth and death. He is known chiefly from later ecclesiastical writers and from a large body of homilies and scriptural commentaries transmitted under his name. The sixth-century Palestinian hagiographer Cyril of Scythopolis, in his Life of Euthymius, describes Hesychius as a priest and teacher (didaskalos) of the church of Jerusalem and records that he was present at the dedication of the church of the monastery of Euthymius, an event generally placed around 428 or 429. That notice is one of the few near-contemporary anchors for his biography. He held the rank of presbyter, not that of bishop or patriarch; the bishop of Jerusalem in his working lifetime was Juvenal.

Later Byzantine chroniclers do not agree on the date of his death. Theophanes the Confessor placed it in a year corresponding to 433 or 434, while other traditions and modern handbooks have associated him with a somewhat later date around the middle of the fifth century. Some scholars have suggested that he may have lived beyond the Council of Chalcedon in 451, but works used to support that claim are of disputed attribution, and no terminal year can be verified. There is no reliable evidence that he was a bishop, a patriarch, or Bishop of Rome, nor is there documentation of a spouse or of children. Whether he lived as a monk before or alongside his priesthood is often asserted in later Orthodox commemoration but is not firmly established by the earliest witnesses, who emphasize his role as priest and teacher of the Jerusalem church.

His literary reputation rests on extensive exegetical and homiletic work. Commentaries or scholia on Leviticus, the Psalms, Isaiah, the Minor Prophets, and other biblical books have been ascribed to him, as have numerous homilies on Gospel passages and on liturgical feasts, including sermons connected with the Jerusalem stational liturgy and with the cult of local martyrs and of the Theotokos. His method is generally Alexandrian, rich in allegory and typology, and he shows familiarity with earlier Greek exegetes. The authenticity and integrity of the large corpus circulating under his name are not fully settled. Medieval catenae frequently excerpt a Hesychius, and later compilers sometimes conflated him with other writers of the same name, including Hesychius of Sinai and the Alexandrian lexicographer. An ecclesiastical history attributed to him was cited in the ninth century but has not survived.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is commemorated as a saint, commonly under the title of Hesychius the Presbyter of Jerusalem, with a feast observed on 28 March. He was not the subject of a later papal canonization in the medieval or modern Western sense, and details of his burial are not preserved. His importance for the history of the Jerusalem church lies in his activity as a preacher and interpreter of Scripture in the decades after the Council of Ephesus, when the holy city’s liturgy and theology were taking a distinctive shape under Juvenal and in close connection with the Palestinian monastic movement.
