Biography

Short Description

The name Hew is a historical form of Hugh, used especially in Middle English and in Scotland. It comes from Old French Hugues and from a Germanic root associated with mind or spirit. As a hagiographical or biographical subject, the bare name does not identify one person. No Wikidata item, liturgical calendar entry, or reliable modern reference work attaches a unique life, dates, or cult to “Hew” alone. Birth year, death year, places, order, marriage, children, papal or patriarchal office, feast, patronage, and canonization or beatification therefore cannot be filled from a verified source without inventing an identity.

English and Latin sources more often write Hugh or Hugo. Older English and some local church titles use Hew. Among well-documented saints of that name are Hugh of Grenoble in the western Alps in the eleventh and early twelfth centuries; Hugh of Cluny, abbot of Cluny in the eleventh century; and Hugh of Avalon, Carthusian bishop of Lincoln in the late twelfth century, remembered for pastoral work and for resisting royal pressure on the English church. A separate medieval cult grew around the child known as Little Hugh of Lincoln in the thirteenth century, whose death was used in a blood libel against Jews. That accusation is historically false and belongs to a wider pattern of antisemitic legend. None of these lives can be assigned to the subject “Hew” without further evidence.

In Scotland Hew was a common baptismal name among clergy and nobility in the later Middle Ages and early modern period. Those men are documented in charters and family histories, not as canonized saints. Some English and Cornish dedications recorded as St Hew’s are generally understood as dedications to St Hugh, but the identification is local and must be checked church by church. No single feast day or patronage list belongs to the name in isolation.

A careful account therefore stops at the onomastic and source problem. Martyrologies, episcopal lists, and modern dictionaries of saints should be searched under Hugh, Hugo, and local spellings, with a place, century, or see attached. Until that is done, dates of birth and death, burial, religious profession, family, and official cult remain unknown, and it is better to leave them blank than to borrow another Hugh’s biography.
